Help Please!

Hi, i have a `92, j reg previa, its done 126k miles, it was running really well then the engine management light came on, now it runs like a bag of s**t, kicks out black smoke and drinks way too much fuel.

Any ideas would be gratefully recieved..... thanks.

Is it a turbo diesel?

If it is it could be a fault with turbo or the car could be in 'limp' mode due to the ECU

will try and find out some more for you. :)

just to clarify my previous entry.

j reg, 2.4 petrol, 126k miles

the car at first would not idle at all, after some fiddling with the ecu it now runs but idles erratically, it still drives really well, but uses a huge amount of petrol (£10 = 12miles!), at a junction you need a lot of throttle to get it going because of the idle and it belts out black smoke when either in low gear or stationary.

hope this clarifys things and that someone is able to offer advice!
