Hi all , I'm new to this forum and toyotas , I have owned and still do a suzuki samurai for some time but I have now decided I want a bigger /tow car for everyday use . I have my heart set on a surf or hi lux (erring towards 3L TD surf ) . I would like to know what cars are fitted with limited slip diffs and or electronic lockers . I am aware they were most often options but on what cars . wrethey only available on landcruisers etc . what should I lok out for . Thanks in advance

Have a look at the data plate under the bonnet, if the last number of the axle code is a 5 it's LSD, 4 is 4 pinion open diff (91ish on) or 2 for a 2 pinion open diff (early 2nd gens)

There is usually a sticker on the diff housing as well,

Last option is to jack the back axle up, spin one wheel by hand, and if the other goes in the same direction its an LSD, if it spins in the other direction its an open diff.

i dont know about landcruisers , but if you go for a surf , get a 3.0 td , gen 3 would be better cos the gen 2 has no centre diff and cant be 4wd in the dry , only in wet,snow/ice or loose ground. auto box fluids are known to overheat too when towing , many have fitted an external radiator to help cool the fluids when towing.MY 1995 3.0 td has a button on the high/low gear stick you press to engage/disengage the 4wd system if this is what you call " lockers "

Lockers are very rare on Surfs and LSD's are on some models, as GT4 says you need to look at the vin plate or jack it up to find out.

My Landcruiser VX80 has front and rear locking diff's, the cruiser is a bit more juicy than the Surf, but should show 20-25 mpg depending on driving conditions, not done any towing but it will drop just under 20 mpg, although you wont know you have a trailor on the back as they have so much torque.
