Trembling In Front Wheels..

Hi All,

Today, I could hear from mechanic in garage that the front wheels in my Carina 1.8 1996 are trembling when the carina are hung on. He tried to push and pull both side of wheel. He recommended me to change the steering lock(I am not sure whether this word is correct!) If this failed, I can not control handle. Is it correct?

If you have experiences such as, how much will it cost to change this?

The steering lock has nothing to do with vibration in the wheels?

If the wheels wobble during driving (usually only at certain speeds) - this normally means that the wheels need balancing.

If the car begins to drive to the left (or right) when you let go of the steering wheel - this normally means that you need to get your steering (sometimes called tracking) alined.

Both of these procedures can be carried out at a tyre supplier (quickfit or NTS). Expect to pay £20 or so to re-balance all four of your wheels. Tracking (ideally using laser equipment) will cost £40.

I meant Steering rack. is it still no meaning for my problem?

A replacement steering rack is quite an expensive repair. I would get someone else to look at your car as well and ask them to give you a written estimate of the cost.

Yes, my garage quoted me 250 sterling for both side.

Initially, there is a leak in my carina-e's left front wheel joint. Another problem is there is noise on cold start and bend steering wheel at maximum( Does it mean Full-lock?). I am not sure this noise results from power steering pump or wheel rack.

Coincidentally, garage called me that joint and whell rack is one body. Then, if I change both sides, the noise will be gone after 250 sterling paid. Is it correct?

Actually, the Toyota dealer quoted me 400 sterling for both steering rack excluding wheel alignment. This garage quoted me 300 sterling for brand new wheel rack with 1 year warranty and alignment.

I am curious whether I am doing well or not.
