New Brake Pads & Discs Needed

Hi Guys,

Front pads/discs seem to be a common fault on Avensis and because of this mine need changing.

Can anyone kindly advise what this will cost or suggest any alternatives (cheaper buys elsewhere)

Car is 2003 (53) Avensis 2.0 D4D - Front pads and Discs

Thanks,

Sheraz

I fitted the same brand to my 2000 1.8 SE. - Very pleased with the performance. The dealer price will be at least double. They should be able to quote a fitted price on the phone. Toyota brakes are very easy to fit and a DIY guide has been posted on the forum:

I 'think' it was £210 from my Toyota dealer

(front brakepads and discs)

Toyota will probably be the most expensive, but if your brakes are squeeking they can probably fix them with modified Toyota shims.

They eventually cured mine in the end (but no disc change).

How does £142.23 inc VAT sound?

Yes . . . that is what the local dealer quoted (apprently on some promo)

I think it is a fair price for 2 front discs and a set of pads!

Will be picking these up tomorrow morning

My dealer has quoted me £210 just for pads, fitted. Does that sound right?

I had rears fitted a few months ago and they were 'only' £115 fitted...

How they can quote that I cannot imagine!!

The (genuine) parts will only cost £30 tops. Pads can be replaced in 15 minutes - even by a novice.

Find another garage.

I think my Avensis needs pads replacing too, the brakes are squeeking sometimes, and pads seems at look low seeing it with the wheel attached. Anyways, I been reading the post for changing pads and disks, and its seem straightfoward enough. But come someone answer these queries i have been for i plunge in to do the work :

1. How do i know if my disk and pads actually need changing ?

2. When I push the piston back, some brake fluid may leak out , where does it leak out from ? Is there a overflow pipe, or do i need to open the brake fluid reseviour ?

3. Do I need to bleed the system, as did a car maintaence course a while back and I remember need to do this for something

Cheers,

David

Hope this helps dkan, pads should be changed when there is about 2 or 3 mm of friction material left if there is less than this the discs will get damaged and need to be replaced sorry cant tell you what the min thickness of the disc should be. There is a breather hole in the filler cap so remove cap and wrap some CLEAN rag round the top of the reservoir but not in it and push the piston back slowly, keep your eye on the rag to make sure it is soaking up the fluid if not change it and do it again DONT get fluid on paintwork it will remove it or stain it badly. You dont need to bleed the system when changing pads normally. When you put new pads on put some coppaslip high temp grease on the back of the pad and on any shims this will stop squeeking. Squeeking is normally caused by a build up of dust and this makes the pad vibrate and squeek. Let us know how you get on, jed50.
