Whooshing Brakes

Hi,

just replacing the pads on the Celica Gen 5 GTR JDM.

With the engine running the pedal is very soft and there is a whooshing noise coming from the pedal when applied.

Being new to Toyotas is this normal or should the brake pedal be hard and quiet as in other cars.

cheers

I assume you've done the basic checks for fluid level?

Sounds as if you have a problem with the servo. Check the hose that goes from the servo to the inlet manifold for security and cracks. If it's damaged replace. It could possibly be the servo diaphragm has failed. Whats the braking effort like? Do you need to exert extra pressure to stop compared to other cars you've driven?

To test the servo, start the engine and run for half a minute. This will allow vacuum to build up in the servo. Turn off engine. pump the brake pedal until the pedal goes hard. You should get 4 - 6 pumps before it does. Once it goes hard, keep the pedal depressed and restart the engine. YOU SHOULD FEEL THE PEDAL GO DOWN. repeat the procedure just to be sure. If there's no difference after a dozen pumps you have a problem. If that's all ok check the fluid level could be you've got air in the brake system in which case you need to bleed it and check for leaks.

If you have to replace the servo I suggest you buy new. You really don't want second hand parts in the braking system.

Hi Dak,

thanks for the diagnosis, No :( and I'll check all that out.

The car has stood around a workshop for a number of years so anything perishable has probably perished.

cheers

Yeah I am with Dak, sounds like the servo to me, check the vacuum line into the servo, and the things Daktari has suggested.

Sitting around could have preished a part, or seal.
