Question Regarding Induction

Hey all, This'll be my first post apart from introducing myself in the 'Newbies' stcky thread!

-and I'm afraid its a hard question. This will test all you 'pros'

Theres a lot of talk about changing the stock air intake filter or fitting an induction kit to get better throttle responce (which I understand), but also changing the sound of the engine?

So, I need someone to describe what the difference in sound is! I'm expecting comical soundbytes of all the members pretending to be yaris engines in their best eight-year-old brum brum noises

Thanks in advance for the help,

-James

the noise from the engine will be deep and quite loud. a friend has a blitz induction kit and that is loud.

if you unclip your air box housing and push your accelrator down you will hear what it will sound like but dont leave it uncliped when you drive about as you will get dust and dirt in your engine

Aah cool, so It just gives you a deeper exhaust note! I was worried that it would end up sounding whiney or something!

One more thing, would modifying the air box, fitting a cool-air intake and upgrading tha panel filter (like in the how to's section) produce the same effect?

Thanks again

-James

No... deeper INDUCTION note ;)

Dunno about modifying the airbox. I have a panel filter and it makes no difference to the noise...

Welcome, by the way

The link worked fine.

If I were you I'd invest in an induction kit, drilling holes in the airbox will give you the desired noise but it's still quite restrictive on the air flow front.

Plus that's a knackered airbox, so if you do sell the car, you'd have to get a new one, or face the questions from buyers about the random holes in ya airbox. ;)

Apexi, envy or K&N best kits to get for yaris!

Ok I'll keep my eyes peeled for 'em

I get what Gnome's saying about re-sale.... Suppose its easy to take the kit out when I come to sell (not in the forseeable future by the way)-hard to thing about selling it when I technically haven't bought it yet!

Last question(!) I fear I may start a massive war here, but which of the three kits mentioned is the best value for money considering maintenance?

lol each to there own but i believe envy and K&N are in best place so are therefore better at being an induction kit but K&N is an oiled filter so could mess up MAF sensor but havent heard anyone having problems with it.

I no someone who has MR2 now who has second hand Apexi for sale if your interested!

yeah you prob have started war :P

Well yeah I suppose I would consider the S/H Apexi if the price is right and your mate isn't in a hurry! have no car to fit it to as yet!

Any Idea what he wants for it and how many miles it was fitted to the car for?

He has a 1 litre and guessing the Apexi is for the 1.3/1.5 P1's?

1 Litre wise, avoid Pipercross kit like the plague! Greddy do a nice kit for the 1 litre which has the piping over the top of the engine so as to get it towards cold air! Add in a cold air feed and you're laughing! Look around on here for pics or if not i'm sure someone will be along to show you!

Greddy sounds good... I was considering using aluminised ducting and an intake in the bumper behind the grille for cold air feed- I guess I've gotta keep the filter itself well away from any moisture?

Thanks for all the useful replies, I feel right at home already!

Oh, and will I have to make any changes to the ECU mapping/airflow regulator/throttle body for the induction kit to work at its best?

Yeah filter away from moisture is a good idea! :P Too many mates i have who live in rural ish areas have killed there cars over last month by driving through standing water with the standard airbox's with low feed's! But yeah a Greddy kit holds the filter high but towards the front and you can then feed air to it! On the aluminium ducting side of things, i would personally spray it black as i see a few chav cars round here with the shiney piping visible through the grill and looks awful!

This post may make an interesting read?

O and a pic of a Greddy fitted (Stolen from Ryan AGAIN! :P)

yeah no worries I was refering to some ducting I saw with an aluminised inner surface and a black kinda rubberised finish on the outside......

(anything to avoid being branded a chav  )

Oohh nice! see what you mean about it being at the front of the engine bay. Does the engine cover not fit once you've put it on though?

Also, I get what everyones saying on the thread (woody) linked, but I just wanna make the car more drivable than anything- performance wise i'm not expecting much from the 1.0 engine. What I really want is handling! I like a car to sound good too though (inside & out!). I want this thing to handle like a Honda racekart (hisssss)

btw have you noticed how everyone on this forum seems to be nocturnal? I guess your all lying awake thinking about induction kits

lol! It's more fun to drive your car in the night... or something like that :P But yeah as far as i'm aware, the engine cover won't fit when this induction kit is used. However it isn't really a problem! Sure you could do a smaller makeshift cover if you wanted! Best kit out there for the 1 Litre imo!

Question for those with a 1 litre, is there no MAF sensor within the piping you replace by fitting that Greddy kit as doesn't look like the Greddy kit has a MAF sensor space? Is it built into throttle body or the remaining stock rubber elbow? If so surely you could make up identical pipework to the Greddy at the fraction of the price!

Well observed! I have access to a workshop which has some kit for making roll cages B) - I could probs get some thin-walled tube section aluminium and use the 'bender' to put the angle in it! then its just some big bore 90 degree rad hose type stuff and a green filter or something.......

.....Now I'm thinking!

Oh yeah and I'm not overly bothered about engine covers!

Stop pinching my pics woody :P

apexi filter for 1.3 or t-sport and greddy if your getting a 1 ltr.

And the engine cover doesn't fit back after

The maf sensor is located at the very beginning of the filter on the 1 ltrs, wrong angle on the pic above to see it.

you can see on this pic the maf sensor, on the left hand side near the throttle body.

So Is that MAF sensor on the original throttle body, which I just clamp the inlet hose from the induction kit to? No further modification required?

Looks sweet though.
