Knock From Door Pillar

I was just wondering if anybody has ever had any knocks associated with the body on their car? My car has an internal knock which iv traced to the passenger side door pillar behind the seat belt mount, if you press hard against the pillar you can hear the knock. I think it might be down to a dodgy weld when the car was manufactured, as the noise comes from inside the door pillar behind the metal. Has anyone had any repairs like this carried out and know how much it is likely to cost? and do you think i could get the repairs at a disounted rate from toyota due to the fact that it is a problem from the factory and something what shouldnt normally go wrong? Thanks everyone

Have you had the trim off? If not, get it off to see if theres anything obvious.

If theres nothing obvious, you wont lose anything from running it up to Mr T to get them to have a look. If it is a dodgy weld you could probably do with getting it sorted! If its still under warrenty then your OK, if not then you'll probably get it done cheaper elsewhere...

Yes iv had the trim off, i completely stripped the passenger side of the car trying to source the knock! The warranty has just expired unfortunately, but like you said i'll prob jus take it to Mr T and get them to give it a once over. I dont think its anything serious but its !Removed! annoying!! will let you know how i get on, thanks for the help

As far as I know, most cars don't have a factory weld there. on the assembly line, the A-pillar right back to the rear quarter is one panel.

Were you the original owner of the car?

Is there a particular thing you do that causes the knock/makes it worse?

has there ever been a repair to the B-pillar?

Check that the seatbelt mount is tightly bolted.

Also, is the car a three door or a five door?

If its a three door, check the fitment of the rear window.

pull off the rubber door seal around the area and check for evidence of a repair (overspray of paint on the mould, running paint, obvious seams or welds) etc etc.

Don't really know what else to suggest.

Im not the original owner but got the car HPI checked when i bought it and everything was fine, Iv also checked for any signs of repair and everything looks normal. The car is a three door and the rear window seems fine too. What i have noticed is that when you remove the seat belt bolt from the door pillar the knock appears to become louder and when you replace the bolt the knock becoms less apparent. The knock generally occurs when there is a change in camber or incline on the road or something that causes the car body to lean. The only thing i can think of is a problem with the upper seat belt mounting inside the door pillar. But like you say i dont know whether this is welded from within the pillar or not because there is no weld points! i guess i'll jus have to get it down to Mr T and let them have a look at it and hope its something cheap!! Thanks again for the help

Hi, no ive still not got it sorted. Iv been a bit short on money recently! Iv noticed tho that if you slacken off the seat belt bolt and then re tighten it, the noise becomes less apparent for a while. Its not a permanent fix tho, it slowly gets louder until it returns back to the original knock. Are there any toyota techs on here that have had similar problems in their dealerships? Please help us out, its soooooo annoying!

Its the front seat belt, top bolt. Its not a permanent fix but it should provide some temporary relief, thats providing we have the same problem. Good luck

What you are hearing is a "creak", not something knocking, in the A B or C pillars and indeed in many areas of your car there are reinforcing panels which are heavy gauge metal which is why your car holds up well in a side front or rear impacts, you cant see them but they are there, in some cars you might have contact between laminated body panels which are welded in place and are very strong but when the body flexes they move a very small amount, this why you hear the "knock", to see whats there pull off the door apperture seal at the B pillar and you will see the different gauges of metal in there.

A cure can be simple, try spraying some cavity wax from above and below inside the B pillar, make sure you protect the seat belt from the wax by removing it first (passengers dont like stinking of cavity wax) or if its still in warranty take it to your dealer and amaze them with your knowledge! B)

Door skins creaking or knocking is just nonsense, the skin is bonded to the case and will not move ever unless its had a new skin fitted and has not been fitted correctly, check warranty with insurance company , they guarantee repairs.

you can buy cavity wax from motor factors for about £3 per aerosol, the idea is to lubricate any panels that might be in contact, but as i said, its stinky stuff so be careful.

If the car is still covered under the warranty take it back and dont put up with any bull*****, its their problem to fix, not yours to worry over.

I,m not a Toyota tech but i have many years repairing many makes of cars, if the 1/4 trim and seat removal and refitting was part of an insurance claim you would get 12 to 18 minutes to do it which would be about £8.40 at £28 per hour labour.

£293 to do this just a way of scaring you off so you wont bother them with a fault that can be hard to find and cure.

I have never removed a1/4 trim on a yaris but really its just common sense as most cars are put together in the same way, have a good look at it and try pulling the panel towards you,you will get some dramatic noises but its plastic so you cant break it, you might have to remove the seatbelt bolts, the seat is probably just a few bolts to remove, go for it! tell your dealer you are going to remove the parts and give it to them to cure the fault and see what they say.

Dont forget ! if you think your dealer is ripping you off you should contact Toyota customer services and explain the situation in your most pleasant and polite manner and you should be treated well.

Hope this helps.

Chris.

Hi les, i had all the interior out when i was trying to find my fault. Its not a hard job really, the hardest part is getting it all back together and even that isnt too bad! You dont have to take the back seats out by the way, jus fold them forward and slide them, depending on which part of the trim you need to get to. You have to remove the seat belt bolts and a couple of screws in the little compartment where the rear lights are, the rest jus pulls out if i can remember correctly! jus be careful not to break any plastic clips and if your having any trouble pulling off the trim, make sure there isnt anything else holding it in place, i.e another piece of trim or screw.

yeah you have to take the sill trim off because its connected to the lower quarter trim, you jus pull it upwards carefully
