Trouble By The Dashboard Light!

Two nights back the light in the dash of my 02 Avensis went out! All guages are now black after dark although warning lights and indicators still function. The light in the radio/cd system is also gone, as is, bizarrely, the alert tone upon leaving the headlights switched on after killing the engine. I can find no blown fuse which I had thought to be the obvious solution. I rang my local dealer who kindly offered to pull the dash apart. This sounds like it's going to cost me a small fortune to correct what I'm sure is a very simple problem.

I should be extremely grateful for any advice from the forum community.

Thanks a million,

Max

Other than the warning tone, are these all not lights that are dimmed by having the headligths on. If part of the dimming circuit has failed, could it take out the lights all together?

Just an idea. If this fed the warning buzzer as well it might just be the root cause. Haynes manual that covers the wiring should help you out (if it does).

Hate to point out the obvious but to have dashlights on you would need sidelights / headlights on therefore where would a dimming circuit come into use? Gauge lights are either on or off, they aren't on unless the sidelights / headlights are on. :)

You might be right, however what I was trying to say was that do all these lights have something in common. If they are all fed from a feed that detects wether the lights are on and via a dimmer circuit to lower the voltage to the lights. If the circuit failed it might fail in the state that supplies no voltage rather than full voltage. Without the wiring diagram it is only speculation though. :)

does your interior light work? if it doesn't it'll be your dome fuse gone, but having said that i dont think that would affect the dash lights. check it and post a reply.

I have a similar problem, but only the one light is out. The backlight for the dial for directing the air flow. I have been able to remove the gear knob, gaiter, and surround, but do I just pull on the next bit (the dial surrounds), or does that long strip need to come off from the passenger side?

Thanks

Mark

its a shame you are so far away!

If the fuses are ok, then the only other thing it can be is faulty wiring.

Have you checked tail and number plate lights? if they are off too, they should be on fuse 19 along with the panel lights (I think thats the right number) it is in the fusebox behind the pull down box below the dash panel near the drivers door.

To nimax,

You should have control model for warning buzzer behind dash just above your throttle leg, also i think has a selection of fuses combined with unit?

My diagram is showing fuse F11 in same fusebox for dash illumination. Could be wrong regarding fuse. Also showing fuse F6 in engine bay fusebox for dash lights???????????

Regards, Beagh.

PS: Let me know how you get on.

To markr,

If you have MK2 avensis, then you need to pull the radio/heater control pack out as one unit & heater pack slides to one side to remove from radio. You need to remove trim that comes from passenger door across top of radio that holds passenger seat belt buzzer. You have 2 screws at top of radio & the same at the bottom. Once out unbolt metal brackets on either side of radio & slide switch pack across. Switch pack has 5 tiny top-hat bulbs, change them all when unit is stripped down. You also need to strip switch pack, has tiny little phillips screws.

Regards, Beagh.

PS: Take your time, not a hard job just a little frustrating. Do not pull switches as they will break.

PPS: If a MK1 forget all the above.

Thanks, I've had the radio off before, but it's been a while.

Are these the types of bulb?

To MarkR,

No that is a 5w Capless bulb. You need 4 bulbs with black locater & one bulb with grey holder. Part numbers should be T9001111040 or T9098111014, but ask your parts man to confirm numbers before ordering. And the bulbs are 12v - 1.4 volts.
