Knocking From Rear

I have just bought a 1995 RAV4 from eBay, the car is immaculate but the only problem I have found is a knock/thud from the rear right hand side of the car.

I have been underneath and cant see anything obvious that might be causing it. The only thing that I can see is a small amount of movement in the bottom lhs shock mount. I I hold the top of the damper inside the car you can feel the knock coming up it.

Anyone had trouble with rear dampers.

sorry its the left hand side that is knocking

You'll probably find it needs the rear suspension bushes replacing. My '94 RAV had them done some time ago following quite noticeable thuds, and all of the bushes were worn. Last year I replaced the shocks front and back - the bushes were ok but the damping was poor due to hydraulic fluid leakage. I used adjustable Spax front and back. Toyota dealers say you can't undo the front struts but its easy. On the back ones its even easier, with access to the rear top mounting through a small plastic cover. My RAV has done 166k miles, and I think we had the bushes done around 100k miles.

good luck and happy motoring
