No Spark! Please Help! :s

It's my first time on here, so I'd like to say hello to all!!!!

Right, I have a MR2, 1991, Jap import, rev 2, twin entry turbo, With no spark. Its a 3s-gte model.;

I have recently (2 months ago) changed spark plugs, dissy cap, rotary arm and leads.

And today, I have tried (all second hand) a coil, with ignitor and a dissy. But none have worked! Origionally, it was coming up with fault code 47, but today it came up with 14. But I did turn car over with coil and igntor disconnected.

Ok, I was driving down motorway (at about 70ish, but not much faster) and had done 80 miles. All of a sudden, it just died on me and with out no warning!!! Obviously it wouldnt start and I thought, oh s@*t, timing belt!!! But after thinking about it (and turning the engine over once for 5 seconds :P, came to the conclusion that it wasnt, as I had compression. Later inspection also confirmed there was no prob with the belt, phew :yahoo: )

Recently, when wet, I have been driving my car and tried to go over 3000rpm (approx) and it would kangaroo, until I took my foot off the gas and drove below 3000rpm. It didnt mater what gear I was in, it would just do this. Below was fine and it would cruise at 70 - 80 mph easily.

She has been pretty well maintained and has only done 63000 origional miles (brought into UK in 1999 on 27000). Only fault I can find is that it gets alil warm down by the intercooler, causing the lamda wire (and others) to melt :huh: I have rectified this though by joining wires :D , but obviously, this has nothing to do with sparks, so thats that :P

I am hoping that you guys may have a few ideas, as it has stumped me, unless its ECU, but thought i'd ask before going too extreme!!!

Sounds like a wiring fault, have you checked the wiring loom between the ignition system and ECU.

I havent, no. Any idea where the ECU lives? Is it a regular occurance for wires to melt on these cars???

I also forgot to mention, that I have checked for a live to the coil and the top prong of the two is live. Also on the ignitor plug, the middle prong (out of five) is the only live. Also checked the resistance of the lead that runs from the coil to the dissy and its 0.01 ohms.

Also tested the immobiliser (fox guard, with a round key entry system, next to steering wheel), i.e. checked for live at coil with immobiliser on (no live), and immobiliser off (live as above).

Sounds like your Lambda sensor wires melted (as you said) and shorted out your wiring... this will cause the car to stop dead (happened with mine)

Once you have sorted this out, check out your EFI (electronic fuel injection) Fuse... its located in the rear fuse box in the engine bay, and its a 15Amp (blue) one...

More than likely this has blown, replace with a new 15Amp fuse and so long as your wiring has been fixed you should be fine...

We popped 3 of the little buggers whilst trying to diagnose the melted wiring (in the dark! :P )

[edit: Yes this melting of these particular set of wires is apparently a common problem, as the hook that holds them away from the exhaust etc can break away from its mounting point... provided you put them back together and cable tie em out the way.. should be fine]

Thanks for your reply, I have checked the rear fuse box, located n/s/r, and the fuses are fine (3 of them with a few relays).

The lamda wire actualy went, back in october origionally. I left my mates (coincidently 3 miles from where I broke down, last week :help: ) and got a mile from his house, when I again, kangaroo'd and coughed and spluttered and stopped! :eek:

Pitch black dark, in the middle of the oxfordshire country side. I finally found the wires dangling after about an hour or probally longer :blink: and fixed them together. Now they broke in a way that it didnt short out, as it broke away from the plug, leaving no bare wire visible.

Fixed it and got on my way.

I got about 1/2 a mile down the road and my back end locked up :ffs:. Got it recovered and sent into a gear box place to find out I had seized a bearing in my box :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: .

£400 spent and not a problem since!!! Well, almost no problem :wacko::wacko:

The ECU lives in the boot. I dont think it is a regular occurance for wires to melt on the MR2. Now that you mention you have an imobiliser I would give it a more thourough testing, it might imobilise the ignition/ECU at more than one point.

Hi guys,

just thought I would let you know what was the cause of my problem.

It s was the King lead (lead that runs from the coil to distributer) :blink:

I did check this lead for resistance, but it was fine, until it went to a specialist :wacko:
