94 Corolla Smells Gas

Hi everyone !

This is my first post on the "Toyota Owner's Club" !!!

I just bought a 94 Corolla base sedan with 185 000 km as a second car and it runs great. The previous owner put over $1000 in the last 6 months so it's in great shape. It was rust proofed too (I live in Canada) so the body is mint.

My problem is that the car smell gas when I get out. not in the car (yet) but it does have a definitive gas smell after running.

Any tips/hints/advice for me ?

Thanks !

Hello and welcome to TOC U.K..................I trust that all fuel lines are intact and no fuel tank leaks?

Does your Corolla have an emmision control system?

If so it could well be the carbon (Charcoal) filter in the engine bay that collects unburnt petrol (that is what we call your gas over here ;) ) and petrol fumes when you switch off your engine.

The theory is that when you restart the petrol vapours will be used by the engine, therby saving the environment.

After a relatively high milage the carbon (Charcoal) filter can become clogged up and unable to do its job properly..........hence your petrol smell.

On most U.K. cars the carbon filter looks like a black plastic boxabout 4 inches square and about 8 inches long. I am not sure if they can be cleaned or if you just have to replace them.

Hope this helps..................at least it may give you a steer in the right direction

Please let us know if you find out the cause of the problem.
