Fitting Driving Lights To 2001 1.0 Gs

Hello Peeps. I'm a newbie here. I have searched for an answer but not seen anything that seems to answer what I'm looking for. I am waiting for my 2001 1.0 GS to arrive on Thursday and am considering up-rating the lights as I live in the country and it does get very dark and woody hereabouts. Ideally I'd like to fit some additional lighting to beef up full beam without having too bright a dipped beam. I was thinking of additional "driving lights" which have done the job on other cars. The car doesn't have any obvious apertures for additional lights and I wouldn't want anything stuck on the front or hanging under the bumper. Any suggestions without getting unlawful bulbs or spending too much wonga. I would also like any info on what would be involved (e.g. drilling holes, splicing into wiring etc). Thanks guys, Ross.

I also live inhampshire and feel your pain about the dark woody lanes :) I replaced mine with the blue/white headlight bulbs from Halfords, they do another set in a gold package but if you look at the bulb rating on the package the blue ones are actually brighter and give a clearer white light, it's improved my visability about 50%

Not bad for £13 per bulb.

I bought some new side light bulbs but haven't fitted them yet.

Word of advice when fitting the bulbs, read the manual first as you haven't got alot of room on the passenger side and its a bit tricky.

It also seems like the easiest option and maybe simple is best. Looking on the Osram site, they show different bulbs for Full and Dipped Beam, is this correct? so all I need is a pair of the Full Beam bulbs, (Silver Star Showing at £19 per pair).

For Adz_Yaris I presume the legal limit for bulbs is still 55W but I'm not sure if there is now also a limit on the brightness too.

Osram or Phillips blue vision bulbs are the best LEGAL bulbs you can buy on the market

Osram are the best, but Phillips aren't far of with a blue version if you wanted a blueish tint.

Both are highly recommended by pretty much everyone

These bulbs are legal, if you go to the headlight section in Halfords you have 3 choices i think red blue or gold, red are standard, blue are the legal white/blue ones and the gold are the legal other super bright ones but if you look at the bulb rating the blue ones have a higher wattage. they also do rally ones that are for off road use at 130watts if you look in the max power section there are a load of illegal bulbs that you can buy but i don't reconmend, in fact the packaging says for off road use only, i was looking in that section at some led side lights to see if they were legal but they are not so didn't bother.

For brightness, DONT get blue ones. Any blue bulbs have a coating on the bulb to give the blue tint that cuts down the light output.

You need to choose (I'm afraid) whther you want a pretty coloured light or the brightest output....

If you want the brightest output then the best, by far, as a result of AutoExpress tests are:

PIAA (but very expensive).

Philips X-treme (+80% brighter)

Osram Silverstar or Philips Vision-Plus (+50% brighter)

GE Megabright (+60% brighter)

All the above are proper road-legal 60/55w bulbs. Any higher and your breaking the law and in danger of melting your plastic headlight.

Halfords use different suppliers for their own make, so you can never be sure what you will get. Its a gamble - but one of their suppliers is GE and I searched through their packets until I found two bulbs with GE on the bulb flange....

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm going for the Osram Silver stars, which can be got for £13.95 a pair including P&P from Consumabulbs. We'll see how well they protect me from suicidal fluffy bunnies, badgers and deer.

Personally I'll keep away from Halfords which in my experience are the place of last resort and only because they're open Sundays. I've had too many items from them which aren't up to the job, and am fed up of the staff who ignore you and don't know anything about their limited range.
