Looks Like Goodbye From Me

Well guys n gals... some of you may spare a thought whilst others may not. For those that do I raise a glass to you! For those that dont, No more thoughts required ;)

On last thursday evening whilst coming home from work at tea time on a major A road I was minding my own business driving sensibly due to the damp conditions on the roads. Sadly a woman ran a red light and precipitated a fairly dangerous set of events that resulted in our cars connecting and mine being spun out of control.

The cops were great, I have a witness to information; that confirms for others, the womans flagrant breach of the red light, and I and she are in fantastic health considering how things might well have turned out. Her car did not sustain very much damage on the surface of things. My car looked pretty bad but not THAT bad. My front bumper cracked and torn, my passenger wing flattened, damage to edge of door, alloy wheel disintegrated... this is the visible damage... I guess the rest is.... inside the poor thing. Not even a window shattered or cracked....

I just recieved a quote for the damage.... 6.2k

For those that know what my cars been through and where it was getting(into very fine shape for a nearly standard mk2 rev3 turbo), another loved Mr2 is looking like its life support is about to be switched off.....

a from brand new engine, a from brand new turbo, a set of from new suspension units, minor panel work, fresh paint, tlc, all done in the not too far passed history.... all killed by some brain dead moron that pulled into a national speed limit zone without looking(reading between the lines of what shes said), but most likely trying to shortcut the lights as I have observed others since doing(3 in 10 minutes) all driving through entirely red lights without a care in the world at the particular junction.

I enjoyed my time with my car, I wish it had been longer; sadly not to be, I now find myself without a car and harrowed by the thought of losing something I treasured so much again in the future. A banger is not a possibility though maybe a necessity till the claim is all sorted out(Im very glad I have a witness described by the police as "my star witness", the hire company as "a very good witness"). I presently just cant see myself buying another tubby 2 as the 6.2k quoted has absolutely horrified me.... which makes a big addition to the loss which had already hollowed me out...... the one saving grace is that the new parts on my car can apparently all be sought for on non insured losses.... but i just wish this brainless fool had actually done as needed for the red light in front of her.... which is stopped....

Not sure what happens from here on out....

I have thought about; significant cash return allowing, a skyline

a single or twin turbo supra

beyond this I really cant think of any cars I might like to own that would suit me and are within my price range..... and worse still I cant think of any car(Im used to bangers before this) that Id enjoy as much or be able to feel as good about besides that dieing rapidly tubby Ive just heard is blinking out.

Thanks for all of the support some of you have provided, Thanks for the giggles to all providers, well met to you all here in this little piece of internet space, and most honestly.... my apology to any any who have found my presence contrary to your own enjoyment.....

maybe c u guys around here.... just possibly not for a while shortly...

my heartfelt fortunes with your cars ladies and gentlemen... stay safe and good fortune avoiding asshats like the one who killed mine.....

Regards

Jinxed(by name and deed) ;)

Sorry for your misfortune.

Absolutely gutted for you. Just don't know what to say. There's one thing when you take your own car out, but when someone else does it, completely out of your control, is another. Just goes to show it can happen to anyone, despite how careful you are.

Best wishes whichever way you go on the car front. At least you're OK. Cars can be replaced.

Thanks for your empathy Jesus... I agree with all....

Hoping its all gonna get sorted without hitches... the nice lady at the hire car company my insurers put me in touch with have offered me an rx8 in the meantime but...... well ...even though I know I didnt do anything wrong I dont feel able to take it at this point esp as literature Ive recieved says 'dont get anything overly big and powerful' as 'you may not be able to claim back the hire costs'....

im planning for a supra i think at the end of this luck permitting.... the mr2 was fantastic but... I dont think ill forget how much cash got wiped out by this after its sorted.... looking at being a lot out of pocket... not bad for the victim huh lol

Sorry to here this mate. Words can explain how you must feel my friend. All the money you have poured into your car making it look nice for some :censor: to spoil it for you :(

But like what Kevin said mate Cars can be replaced mate. It could have gone the other way and you could have been seriously injured.

You take care mate and i hope the claims go well and hope that you are able to get yourself a nice ride again

Glad to hear you alright! Same happened to me in the TSport, all fixed now though. Unfortunately insured by the same company as the other driver and no witnesses - so guess what 50/50 split grrr. I hope they gave you a better hire car than a chevvy matiz!!!!

Oh Jinxed ...you poor thing and poor car... I feel your pain but am happy you are alive and well.

You live to fight another day in another car.

Posted

Glad to hear you ok Jinxy.... but losing the '2 sucks...

cant you buy a cheap 'engine knackered' one.. and plonk your engine etc into it?... surely even that it cheaper than 6.2k... thats expensive!

especially as you said its a relatively new engine etc

Thank you for your thoughts and kind regards mr.miller, callisto and JJ....

ouch mr miller :( if they pull summat like that on me I really am going to ask whoevers dealing with me if theyed like me to bend over and assume a position...

callisto... (reg 'another car') I never had much trouble letting go before now.... with the exception of two ladies & 1 friend, this car is the only other entity Im really having trouble letting go of... just dont want to

JJ ... think its a worthy suggestion... given that I was checking out rx7 specs and ...they seem a little erm... less than what i thought they were, given also that costs of everything else Ive looked at are a bit above my expected financial resources, and finally Ill be damned if i take a step down from the 2....the idea of sticking to the original plan(after all the effort thus far) is possibly a possibility...

must admit I thought about whether it would be possible to do things the other way around, get any cheap mk2 and cannibalize it for bits to make mine ok again... Not sure if i have the support i need here at the mom to do that though :( plus having not seen the detailed breakdown(its in the post to me right this mom) I dont know whether the chassis been harmed yet.

If the chassis ok then it may be possible to switch bits to mine and get it going again(if im right in assuming things like uk mk2 front end bits are the same as import mk2 front end bits), back end looks fine, main impact was taken by front passenger wheel, wheel arch and wing though i havent looked under the bonnet so.... given the axle been given a savage jolt probably I jus dunno..... be a lot more easily accoplished work to switch bits to mine i think.... otherwise itll have to be a cheap import or a trip to an mr2 breakers

heavyish lifting... can do

non engine related(me n mi dad are scared of this engine lol) mechanical stuff... help from mi dad can do

welding... if he has a good day and feels nice he could weld a cream cake to a certain someones mitt 5*

respraying bits... with a lil help from mi dad can do

as for the rx8 hire car lol the solicitors secratary believes I dont really need a decent car ROFLMFAO(rate of pay for solicitor £155 per hour  :censor: ) and that I need to minimize my costs(£155 per hour lololol) so I suggested maybe I can hire a 2cv ... she didnt want to talk to me after that

Ive lost cars before.... and had the good conscience to admit it when its been my fault ... a little prayer for the car, sent it on its way and moved on .... the tubby is very diferent for me..... not my fault(perhaps astoundingly), lot of cash and love been put in her .... First really nice car that defined a piece of me... melodramatic maybe but of all the words I could say those fit the best....

its not over till theyve took her away.... and I havent quit yet ... just think this ones out of my hands... I have a firm belief that here in the UK a good result is where a victim comes off worse than the criminal, and ends up with far less than they originally had...

no way can 6.2k be 'economical to repair' .... but if the insurance company try to sell her back to me for more than 1.5 (not bad askin price given car(post accident - damage factored in) is worth less than zero in glass's 'reality guide' to my cars worth) then I hope they have current passports.....

*goes and puts lottery ticket on  then googles 'columbian hitmen for hire', & 'mercenaries r us - we be killin for the thrillin' (jk ;) )

That's not a good result, just a common one ;) You could try getting in touch with these people, they're run by someone on Pistonheads and come recommended by people over there that have used them. They'll help you get what you're entitled to, so that's a like for like hire car and a sensible valuation for your car that reflects the work you've had done to it. Sadly that won't be the value of a similar car + the cost of the work you've done as that's not the way car prices work, but it should be more than just a boggo standard car though :)

It still occasionally amazes me just how stupid people can be out on the roads. Running a red light at a junction is bad enough in itself, but failing to spot the car that was going through the green too... Just out of interest, what on earth did they say? How did they try to justify their actions? 'I didn't see you' doesn't really wash when there's a huge glowing red light to look out for too. Are the Police prosecuting them? Given there's a good witness I hope they're going for at least driving without due car and preferably dangerous driving. Might make them think twice about doing it again at least.

Sadly from what you've described of the accident and the quote to repair the car it sounds like the chassis is damaged at the front. Obviously you won't know for sure until you get the quote breakdown, but even fixing it up using a donor vehicle might not be cheap or easy. It might still be worth buying the car back and pulling all the good bits off it, either to sell on or to drop into another car though.

Finally, as others have said at least nobody was hurt. Cars can be replaced, even if you do have to fight tooth and nail with companies (some of which should be on your side) to get an equal replacement. Good luck :)

I agree with a lot of the comments already posted so i wont duplicate them.

Really sorry to hear that you were the victim of a mindless ******! Cant believe the repair bill they have quoted you although a full 3SGTE engine block costs circa £5k from Mr T who get them imported from Japan (according to a thread over on IMOC).

You considered a R33 Skyline GTS-T which has 250bhp and has a Front engine Rear whell drive setup. :)

As FP says... 6.2k quote suggests chassis damage hon... but I would seriously consider mebbe buying a Shell if you can find one.. and transplanting all your bits into it...

I know a few peeps if you wanna catch me on MSN... couple of big scrappys in Rochdale.. and a few mechs etc... Ive been told connecting up an engine isnt too difficult... plug n play kinda thing... but lol Im no mech :P

im honoured to be offered that help and i may well avail myself of your kindness when things are getting resolved. At the very least, your generosity reaffirms a failing faith in humanity in general for me. you may not be a mechy but... you certainly are wonderful :)

Cheers Flatpack n Fizz,

Regarding what she said, forgive me for using some discretion here... maybe afterwards ill tell but for the meantime prob best for me to keep to my stuff. I am actually glad shes ok and im ok... If I hadnt taken evasives and got my car as far over then.... might have been 1 or 2 dead people there, braking was a really poor option given the speeds, road conditions and distance when she pulled out. She 'just' ran a red light and didnt look at either the light or in the direction of oncoming traffic... I too hope the why is looked at and appropriate action took by the authorities. But then the world isnt fair, bad things happen and injustice occurs daily.......

a brief update... recieved the detailed breakdown ... Mr T reckon some part on the chassis called the A pillar needs sorting.... amongst a whole crock load of front end stuff. Im now well into the bit I find almost unbareable... the not knowing how things will transpire. Mi dad wanted to see the car for himself, took him to see it and well; whether sheer optimism or not(hes not known for optimism), he took a quick squiz around it and said "this car isnt ending up in a scrapyard", I of course respect his right to determine its too much later. He also noticed that on the breakdown of parts it stated a wing mirror, both of which look fine and intact. This has led him to further question whether the damage is ... as serious as has been determined. He has the kit for straightening the car if needs be. He has the tools and knowhow to find his way through most of it(the engine is one thing he wont do himself), he just doesnt want to do it anymore. I think he's secretly as gutted as I am and wants this to work out ok.

On a side note a mysterious gentleman was inspecting my car yesterday and nobody seems to know who he was but hes taken a breakdown of the damage and a note of the storage costs.... it was also suggested that the gentleman had spoken with me ... which no engineer has, nor has my solicitor(erm only the lady that answers his telephone), and I havent spoken to the other camp at all. very mysterious. The gentleman at my insurers reckons its most likely a good sign as apparently somebodies not hanging around at all.

Ive given up the idea of a hire car altogether and decided that the volvo(dad willing) is going to have to do for a while. Its a pointless notion getting a hire car. theyre going to lump me with a teeny small box on wheels, and even then I spose i might end up paying.

And we really have a dilemma... do we make a point of claiming for the engine, turbo n other from new parts and risk raising the buyback price of the car or do we not make a point of claiming for the bits in order to risk being able to buy it back for less...... dilemma dilemma. wish someone could answer this with utter absolute universal truth.

Hoping the 2 is not out of the running yet.... I did look at skylines, even supras, and for one reason and another I really cant stop wanting to be back in my tubby. On a brighter note, spoke to one of the guys at Mr T today who hasnt seen my car since the accident but is all too aware of the work put in and the love for it... and he's provided us with permission to ring anytime for advice on the 2 if we try to get it sorted and stated that Mr T will support us 100% in establishing and asserting the true value of the car given the work and parts when(if :( I have no trust in insurance companies to do the right thing, hope to be shown im wrong) it comes to settlements. If I had more money Id buy them(Mr T) all beer and nachos

Maybe this thread will be a journey... if I get past the 'getting my car back' stage and repairs commence, maybe itll become a watch while shes fixed kinda thing with piccies n all :) go figure huh... technoputeristical jiggerypokery huh. All in all feel like a little hope has been given back to me today....

Sounds odd, no idea what's going on there...

Its got to be better to get any hire car than end up inconveniencing you and your dad until the insurers get their act together :) Still might be an idea to at least talk to the folks at Europa, they will sort you out with a decent hire car and can be useful for other things too (like not having to pay the excess on your insurance until the other person's insurance company can actually be bothered to pay up).

I understand you don't want to go into what the woman said to you at this point :) I wouldn't be surprised if she took one look at the car and told you that you were speeding and it was your fault. If it'd been me I'd probably have slapped her at that point :P

Nothing like that :) I dont know exactly why she did what she did(will anyone bar her?) but she was pleasant enough and just seemed as shocked as me. From her reg no. it looks like hers was a brand new car.... bet shes gutted for her loss also... all round not a good day for anyone.

ok so today was another day of trying to wade through the paperwork and required ringing insurers n solicitors.

So... the car is being retained for salvage so at the very least the important bits will be mine, which is better than them not being. Secondly, I was told by the solicitor, he thinks its all 'just going to go through'.

Hope so...

well today I recieved the engineers report and I think he must be a total nipple. Car valued (for a pre accident good condition, no signs of old damage) at 2200 quid.... taking the urine. Im sure this must be very wrong... and if its not I think its absolutely !Removed! ridiculous that on top of a stupid cow running a red light and destroying my car(apparently its a category B ... totally frickin wonderful) Im going to be totally inconvenienced, out of pocket and screwed righteously.

I am so very very angry .... if it wasnt for the law Id have a pile of bodies in the back of the volvo by now. And some of them would still be twitching with the last vestiges of life fading in their eyes :censor:

well, with closer inspection of a few things im looking forward to a good battle tomorrow, win or lose. My goal is to achieve admission of misconduct or incompetence.

a little back story....

the car was given an estimate by some muppet(I do not believe that this person is indicative of everyone at Mr T as the guys not in the bodyshop have always been excellent). Said muppet believes my car needs a new wing mirror... i wish i could post the pictures, guess why? because it has 2 functional very intact mirrors, figures out by 100 already. Secondly, apparently the muppet thought i needed a new number plate and plate carrier , add another 90 quid to the total out so far... which guess what? ... are absolutely intact and fine(again I wish I could post the piccies)

Now, here for me is the rub at this point... if the pillock couldnt even spot these very obvious incorrect items then, given he didnt spot obvious stuff on the car that can be seen just by walking towards the car whats the likelihood the rest hasnt been even looked at. My car hasnt moved an inch for this inspection btw, let alone been put on a ramp. To make matters worse, my front bonnet has been bent a little and the bonnet wont open, so guess what, "no access" to the engine serial no. Anyone see a problem with this? Well YES, its a rear engine car and the damage is all at the front.

Nicely done I say.

It gets worse... the above copy of a breakdown estimate from my solicitors engineer quotes EXACTLY all the same mistakes. And this guy apparently even LOOKED at the car. LOL was he just lazy? and couldnt be bothered? or is he a blind fool that just coincidentally made exactly the same mistakes Mr T's engineer made? yeah .... he did his job he did. goddamn copied their breakdown and probably had a nice paid extended lunch :censor:

and worse still(mebe) ....

I checked glass's online pricing site just to see if they even price up the correct car; as 2200 is very low seeing as it was good nick, and 3.5 - 4.5k (roughly?) id say was the going prices for a mk2 rev 3 jap turbo. 3995 was the cheapest on autotrader atm(at wintertime too, its not even really nice looking, stickerified  ). well seems that glass's online site doesnt even have the selectable option to pick a GTS mk2 rev3 (3sgte mk2) import. So i personally reckon they got their figure from a uk spec NA GT(from what i could tell was the only selectable option along with another which I had no idea what it was). I may be a little off the mark with this one... Im no expert Im happy to admit, maybe glass's is a front for insurance companies to further minimise paying out by seriously undervaluing cars? who knows not I fo sho

All in all, that pile of bodies I was on about..... might be about 3 bodies higher by the end of this!

cool eh?

Ditch the solicitor, they're obviously incompetent. The very fact that their receptionist kept trying to fob you off implied they weren't interested. Given there's no real dispute over fault in your case do you really need one?

The insurance company makes money everytime they pay out less than a car is worth when its written off, so their first offer is always going to be rubbish. Glass's is the industry standard and is used by everyone in the motor trade valueing cars, so it's accurate enough... It doesn't cover imports at all though, so that's not a lot of help ;) You'll have to just gather as many ads as you can for cars of a similar age and condition and hit them with those, the owners' clubs are probably a good place to look as well as Autotrader. Don't accept a settlement you're not happy with, you can force them to play ball eventually (ultimately there's a regulatory body you can do to if you're not happy with them, FSA possibly?).

I'd be tempted to get a price (in writing) to buy back the salvage based on the current value of the car before telling them their valuation sucks though ;)

im glad someone else thinks this is ridiculous...

at present she 'hasnt accepted liability' which is a bit oh no this going to become drawn out. The solicitor himself seems a reasonable chap but I dont think he's aware the engineer he sent is a plonker. He will though after today..... I hope the witness isnt an unscrupulous fellow

as for the buyback price.... my lil cars worth £0.00 in buyback presently on paper. But.... im going to create a stink over this with all concerned, and Mr T's engineer at the bodyshop is second on my hitlist....tomorrow he finds out where the engine is on an mr2  and his boss finds out he cant tell when a wing mirror etc is fine lmao

if this continues ima be going back off sick im that angry....

car is worth 0 for salvage cos its a cat b, by law they have to destroy it so it doesnt end up back on the road, but you should still be able to go and take whatever you want off it.

get as many pics off autotrader of cars same relative age, mileage, condition as yours was (obv. the higher priced ones) and use these to barter for more cash, there just throwin the first offer in to see if you accept it, they dont assume your gonna take the engine, etc do they?

feel for you bud, i really do, had the same thing happen to me 4 years ago some pillock overtook 3 moving cars when i was comin the other way, no where to go but into him, but i had over 20 witnesses (took me ages to write down) and had nowt better to do then harrass the insurance company, have you contacted your insurance company? they usually give you a number for a claims specialist, wish i could remember the one i used as he was an absolute legend, never seen anyone earn there money so well.

good luck with it mate, keep us posted

Cheers for the encouragement, advice and empathy Hou

Well I was all depressed and saw a diferent tack than immediately undermining the estimates but it now looks like its necessary. A call to the insurers resulted in being told the only thing they can do is get the engineer(he was from her company incidentally it turns out finally) to justify his decision about cat B, to support this action theyve been informed by a mech with 35 years in the trade; who dealt with accident engineers regularly, that he was gobsmacked at what he reckons is 'superficial damage' being termed cat B, .... cat C or even D he reckons...

spanish to me like but.... that was his reckoning. I really get the feeling this isnt going to end well but.... no matter I aint done yet even if it all goes south. After I secure a better job(sounds less likely than it actually is lol).... first priority is another sweet car if I've lost this one. Might even be able to scrape enough for another rev 3 tubby together with a little risk and penny pinching.

Could have really done with news of category change today... also found out that possibility of a new Shell is not really possible for me(doesnt really need one ac mechy... he reckons its a days work for a focussed skilled guy). Ay dear.... still now theyve given an initial estimate I can take my baby home from the lonely bodyshop yard and get it a place in our final resting place for lost motors.

Hopefully Shell be able to be fixed... its not over yet. Even if theres just shouting left

My thanks for the compliment dear lady Cali :) when I get going it seems a bit melodrama to me tbh, but then I almost became a theatre studies student lol(lol at me, with no disrespect to people who chose that)

Truth be told, Im finding it a little cathartic sharing this. Its as much a journey for me on a personal level as it is a journey to get the car situation sorted out. I dont think the people around me realise what this car symbolised to me. It was a mark of getting somewhere finally after a period of not really getting anywhere. I didn't realise I could feel such passion/love for a car. It was all really only dreaming until the day I got this(anyone who has driven many sheds and seriously upgraded to a car thats actually worth more than 1k will possibly understand lmao). I've known some bleak times, I've survived but thats not really living in my estimation. The black diamond lining this car placed on things was.... valuable.

As that ol song says...

'Oh you know it seems so wrong, but you dont know what youv'e got till its gone, so tear it down and put up a parking lot' oooooo dah doooo dooo dooooo ;)

its been a trip, best time of my life thus far.... btw if anyone notices a 'fat lady' singing please please please silence her lol

Maybe someone else in a similar situation that doesnt have anyone to confide in or doesnt have the courage to ask may get something from this that helps them... not really sure but .... some of the people here have warmly shared in my adventure, helped me, and ... I guess though the news isnt good presently its the course of the journey for them so they can see whats happened to something theyve helped create. Maybe Im a tad strange for finding bad endings as good for closure as good endings ...unsure.

well to update....

Yesterday I was informed that I cant have a Hire car now as my cars been valued(hang on it was bobbins lol) and that its entirely my concern if I cant get another car to transport me or suffer as a result! I work 25 miles from where I live, if i couldnt get there Id get rightly let go(happening april anyhow due to fixed term contract and funding issues I reckon). So sweet.... I was actually wondering what recourse I'd have legally if I lost my job as a result of transport issues with me actually being the victim of her manouver(still yet to be acknowledged I believe, I could laugh and cry at the same time). I swear; as whatever Gods that may exist can witness, if she doesnt admit liability and its found in my favour by the insurance companies, that she was at fault, I will sell my most valuable possessions(except the car lol), and spend whatever cash I have endeavouring to either support a criminal prosecution or bring a private prosecution against her.... and thats a bit out of character for me that is..... I've forgiven people in my life that have betrayed me on levels beyond this. Some hurt huh....

Today, I put together print outs of all the rev 3 tubbies currently available on Autotrader within 100 miles of me, a pretty informative description of Rev 3 tubbies nicked from here(sorry if I infringed someones copyright but I plead guilty to diminished responsibility for my actions, whoever has that copyright may well help me get my car situation sorted amicably and so I offer something more valuable to me than money, my warmth(which isnt for sale cashmoney).... your wonderful for that description and breakdown), and copies of all the reciepts for work done by Mr T. Tomorrow its all off to my solicitor and... lap of the gods then I guess.

Rev 3 tubbies are 3995 to like 5500 presently on autotrader :o so 2200 is.... words fail me without resorting to sentences comprised of entirely salacious remarks and expletives :D

In the letter, I've really owned my own feelings yet been very genuine about what Im experiencing without alienating my solicitor one bit... Im kind of proud of it. I hope that fairness rules this situation. And now I've got hopless optimism out of the way what can I really expect? to get utterly screwed I reckon lmao  My faith in people is damaged for many reasons, almost everyone of them pertaining to the very people im referring to. Being reliant on others is not something I deal with very well...... maybe tomorrow or shortly there will be decent/good news.

2 series volvo is starting to grate now also ..... very reminiscent of when I was having engine probs with the tubby 2, not long before drunken posting(for anyone that remembers that  ) I guess lol

Posted

well the tubbies getting brought to sanctuary tomorrow.... and at least its going on tarmac not a bit of grass to avoid mud etc. No news yet regarding anything but the solicitor should have what I sent now and its now more waiting. Many of my crossable bits are crossed and deep down inside Im nurturing the hope that I will be able to get my car repaired.... but I was told a rather unsettling story today about how someone else was crashed into and it went to an ombudsman as it was all unfair.... and unfair it remained....
