Right then, I know nothing about these cars..... or any japanese cars for that matter!

A mate has a 1977 (RA28) Celica 1600ST. It has a genuine 7000 miles on the clock - still on the original tyres! The interior of course is mint, it's been dry stored in a dark garage all it's life. It's only done 4k dry weekend miles in the last 4 years.

Colour is like this one, maybe slightly lighter (original paint) - mk.jpg

A few minor surface rust spots (no rot at all) as you'd imagine, but nothing that couldn't be blown in and then buffed back to perfection - the rest of the paint and chrome is great. Never dunted or hit. Story is apparently that the first owner bought two, a black one and this red one, and put the red one straight into storage (no idea why!). Then it went to a second owner as payment for a debt, he "didn't like it" and rarely drove it so it lived in his garage. Was then sold to my mate 4 years ago.

Starts and drives perfectly, original optional alloys etc, twin Solex (?) carbs, fancy wood-rimmed chrome spoked steering wheel, basically a timewarp car.

Are these desirable, worth decent money? He was offered £4k (seems low from what I have been told) by a fella today, and although he doesn't want to sell, financial circumstances dictate otherwise!

Just wondering if anyone has an idea of the true value of the car to a Toyota fan, more a VW man myself although I'd love to own this one!

TIA......

Think we need to get some more details first before any proper answers can be made.

If it is a 1600ST then it won't be an RA28, as the R in RA designates the R series engine (2 litre in this range of Celicas). If it was a 1600 it would be a T series engine, and the UK only got TA Celicas in coupe form, not liftback like the RA28 we got. Also is it definitely a relatively late 20 series Celica or an early 40 series car, as values differ a huge amount. Easiest way is post the chassis/VIN number and we'll work it out from there (or post a decent photo) Hope this helps, rather than confuse!! Ian.

Oh aye, it helps! All the codes etc. are a touch confusing, me being a VW man. I've been told as you said, that a 1600ST can't be an RA28 - I presumed that was the code, I grabbed it off a site with a huge list of years, countries sold, engine sizes, etc., and probably picked the wrong code.

He is 'sure' it is a 1977, and I remember from the last time I saw the v5 it was recorded as a 1600ST.

I'll be down tomorrow to get all the details, chassis/engine number etc. - and hopefully some pics if he can get the car out from behind all the dead VW's it's stuck behind (he is a VW breaker, and this is stored in the same unit as the VW's for breaking!). Will keep you updated......

Aye, if it was a GT apparently it would be worth a good stack...... I was sort of hoping someone could tell me roughly what he should be asking for it, being an ST!

Car is in N. Ireland by the way.....

Well it's not a 1977, it's 1978, so not as hot........ it's a saloon.

Couple of pics, for those who know their celicas and can maybe spoon-feed me information and perhaps a value!

It's on just over 7400 miles from new.

Bear in mind it is filthy, dusty, and every single particle of dust seems to have reflected off into the camera flash!

Oh, and I presume the GT Badge is an add-on by some fool........ unless anyone recognises that as a GT engine? Twin Solex carbs, and that's about all I know - no idea where to find the engine number on the lump itself!

Well the plot thickens!!

It is a pre-facelift 2nd Generation TA40 Coupe but.......................

It's got a 2T-G Twin Cam Engine fitted or it's had the 2T-G Twin Cam cylinder head fitted onto the original 2T-B engine.

The model code TA40R-BCMSBW confirms "77xx-81xx TA40R-BCMSBW 2T-B CP Man 5F T50 4.100 ST "which roughly translates as a 1977 to 1981 TA40 Coupe with 2T-B (1600cc twin Aisin carburettor ohv)engine with T50 (five speed manual) gearbox in ST specification for the UK market.

So it makes it difficult to value as no matter what mileage it's showing it's a bit of a hybrid, and as I said earlier Gen 2's are still the unloved Celica compared to the Gen 1's.

Twin cam motors are quite desirable but it is always worth checking for an engine number as it could even be the 18R-G Twin Cam motor ( I'm not that hot on visual identification, but I'm sure a more knowledgable member will be along soon)

Give us a idea of what you think it could be worth and we'll go from there.

Regards, Ian.

Aye, given the info I've had from here and the similiarly titled thread on www.retro-rides.com, it's worth a lot less than £4k due to being a "bitsa" as well as a less desirable Mk2! So I assume he'll take the £4k he's been offered - the fella who offered it is local, and has given it a good look over. I did have a quick look round the engine for an engine number, but had no clue where they hide on these engines so no joy.......

Surely, if your mate has had it for 4 years, he must have the Registration Documents. The VIN number & engine number have to be on those.

Seems a bit odd, that if the 1st owner put it into storage & presumably didn't drive it, & the 2 nd owner didn't like it, driving it very little, while your mate has had it for 4 years & if the 7k mileage is correct, drove it rarely too, that it should have had either an engine swop or mod.

The 2 sets of numbers from the Reg Docs would throw light on the mystery.
