Problem Brakes

Hi,

I've just prepared the Celica for it's MOT and investigated my "whooshing brakes" problem a little further.

New pads all round and fluid level ok.

With engine running and foot on the brake they make a whooshing/hissing sound from the footwell and the brakes work ok-ish and the pedal goes almost to the floor.

If I then switch off and pump the brake it goes hard.

When the brake is applied with the engine running the tickover increases.

Cant hear or see any leaks in servo pipes under the bonnet.

Has anyone any ideas please as I am a little puzzled.

cheers

Have you bled them? If yes, then it sounds like either the one way valve or the servo has had it. First replace the valve. This is attached to the vacuum hose where it enters the servo housing. Test them again. If it's still the same it'll be the servo unit itself. It will have to be replaced as I'm pretty sure it's a sealed unit.

If you've not bled the brakes, do so. Then test as above.

Little linky Here explains how it all works.

So no change in fluid level after you've tested it?

Sounds like it could be a fault in the brake booster, but I'd be tempted to bleed the brakes some more as this is also a sign of air in the lines. Are you bleeding them by yourself or do you have an assistant?

Perfectly normal for revs to increase.

Hi,

Thanks Dak and Limey.

I haven't bled the brakes at all yet.

I know I probably should as the car has stood around for a long while.

Every time I bleed brakes my nipples snap off, then were into undoing rusty brake pipes and before I know it I'm back to the master cyl.

Too late now as it is going in at 11 in the morning but if it fails on the brakes I'll get them or my regular mechanic to have a look-see.

cheers

if you,ve only replaced the pads i would certainly give them a good chance to bed in as if the pedal is ok when you,ve exhausted the servo it may be that the pads haven,t bedded into the old discs yet .old discs wont be flat like your new pads .give it a try before replacing servo etc

Plus Gas is your friend ! :)

Applying a little heat can help as well. On well corroded examples I usually do - heat, good scrub with wire brush, plus gas, cuppa, undo.

Hi all,

Thanks, I'll gas my nipples and heat them up and give them a turn and see what happens.

I'm looking for front calipers in another thread "Motor Factors" and if I can get hold of two that will solve the problem at the front.

cheers
