Hi chaps, My mate bought a GLI Carina from e-bay as a none runner, was told by the seller he had driven to his folks home, and when he came to leave the car would not start, he went on to say he had the RAC out but they could not find the fault so they then towed him to a garage, who also could not find the fault but told him it may be the ecu. Now I drove my mate to Bournemouth to collect the car, knowing we would have to tow it. We met the seller who while completing the documents told us his wife had left him and was rather chuffed, in amongst the documents we found the car had been Sorn although it is still taxed and mot, my mate rang the chap who told him he new nothing of the Sorn. For me this is where the chap’s story of the problem with this car starts to fall apart. The car will start but cuts out all most as soon as it has started, My question is this does this car have to have a alarm fob in order to start, if the immobiliser is activated will it deactivate when the key is in the ignition, or does he need as I suspect this fob device also. It may be me being suspicious but I wondered weather the former owner’s wife had perhaps put the immobiliser on the car before leaving :help:

The car does have a remote fob. I have never used this. The ignition Key arms/disarms the alarm system. Unlocking the driver's door with the key un-sets the alarm/immobiliser. The alarm is set by locking the driver's door with the key. This should cause a red LED to illuminate in the central console next to the gear lever.

If this is OK - I would discount the alarm.

Faulty wiring to the distributor (it is a integral coil); Faulty injectors or fuel pump; Leak in throttle body or inlet manifold are the likely problems.
