T4 Windscreen

Hello everyone,

I was on my way to Tesco last night when what sounded like a rock from space hit my windscreen! I don't know what size it was, but from the sound it made I thought that the damage was huge.

I think it must have been thrown up by an oncoming vehicle and it hit the bottom drivers side corner.

What started as a chip and small crack slowly grew into a large crack and it is clear that the screen will need to be replaced.

My question is can this be done by an independent company, such as Auto Windscreens? I was looking at it this morning and the whole rear view mirror assembly (rain sensors, auto dimming, etc) is attached to the inside of the windscreen. There is also a shaded "D" shaped section to deal with that low winter sun when it gets between your visor and the mirror.

I have a feeling that Mr T will have to deal with it, but I wonderred if anyone had experienced this before.

Apologies if there are previous posts of this nature, but I'm at work and haven't time to look through them!

I recently had a new windscreen after experiencing a similar event with the screen in my T180 Tourer.

The car is a company vehicle via contract hire so I was instructed to go to Autoglass. Autoglass replaced the screen promptly the next day after confirming make & model of Avensis and confirming the presence of light/rain sensors. Unfortunately the lights came on all the time after the screen was fitted so as the timing coincided with the 10,000 mile service I asked my local Toyota dealer (the excellent Ron Brookes of Ilkeston) to investigate.

Seems a screen from a lower spec model had been installed AND the Autoglass people had left marks on the lens of the light sensor which duly needed replacing :ffs: . Ron Brookes took charge and told the contract hire people that they could sort it all out by having the RAC glass people fit a new screen at their garage. This meant that Ron Brookes could install & check the new sensor and I would only have to take the car to the dealership for a single day (with courtesy car) rather than messing around driving to a windscreen fitter. :yahoo:

All is now well, top marks to Ron Brookes :toast: . Hope this helps.

Thanks for the prompt reply Shoto

That was my main worry about a non-dealership fix, I suppose independent repair shops can't possibly be up to date with every variation of every model from so many manufacturers.

Unfortunately, mine is not a company car, but I think my insurance will cover it (after I Shell out the first £50)

She's approaching the next service anyway, so I think I'll just get her booked in and get the lot done.

That was an expensive trip to Tesco!

  • 2 weeks later...

may need sat nav strip and rain sensor also make sure its fitted in side in this weather the glue needs time to bond and if too cold its not a good fit !!!!!

use a main agent to supply you with a toyota screen not after market glass

do a google search and you will see how cheap aftermarket glass is

also you have the support of the insurance company to have a factory fit screen good luck

My T3-X had a new screen after a similar incident to yours, it was replaced by the RAC, they fitted the correct type, 1st time, with no issues at all, the guy certainly seemed familiar with the Toyota as I was chatting to him as he did it, no faffing around. My only minor niggle was that about 3 weeks later the little plastic shroud holding the cables up, behind the mirror fell off, took me about a minute to put it back, no worries!

Mine was replaced by Autoglass within 2 weeks of getting the car.

Same problem - rock thrown up by a lorry on the M-way but the lorry was going the opposite direction so I could actually see the rock coming! :help: It hit the bonnet and then the middle of the windscreen. If it had just hit the windscreen direct I reckon it would have shattered. Terrifying experience.

The mark on the bonnet was a gouge and it looked like brick dust on it.

Result - resprayed bonnet and new windscreen.

In fact both were done to perfection and you'd never know. Touch wood, no more rocks in the past 18 months.
