Whats The Orange Light In The Interior Light Cluster?

I have a 2006 Avensis T3-x and there is a small orange light in the interior light/ultrasonic cluster that comes on with the headlights. Anyone know what it is?

It illuminates the gear lever, the dealer told me after I couldn't figure it out.

I can't seriously believe that anyone who doesn't know where the gear lever is kept is allowed on UK roads.

Just so where talking about the right light it shines through a small hole nest to the ultrasonics in the interior light cluster?

Trust me next time your in the car at night turn the lights on and off and you'll see. First came out on big BM's and Mercs.

hmm not sure I have it in the automatic version, as the automatic version the gear lever gate is back light illuminated as standard, so you see the gear selection - also gear selection appears in the dashboard.. e.g. reverse = R

That's really useful. How about next time putting a light on the mirror adjustment buttons for when you're parking at night.

I didn't even notice the light until I fitted Toyota's leather & chrome Gear knob. :D

I thought the same until I checked tonight and I have the orange illumination and I have auto. The light is so dim anyway I didn't know it was there!

I checked, you're absolutely right it does illuminate the gear stick...blimey they think of everything.

Obviously something as small and fiddly as the gear lever needs illuminating where as the mirror switch, being so big and easy to find at night, does not....

My last three cars before Avensis do have illuminated mirror switches, so mr T cut a corner there. Also some luxury cars have illuminated air vent controls (would be nice touch, to see if vent was open or not) but that is not the norm.

I double checked on my Avensis and I do have the light.... though I don't notice it at all with auto transmission!

I find the dipped headlight beam confusing, as it looks like a side light symbol with two lights emitting from the sides
