D4d Cold Start Tickover Speed

My T3 D4D Corolla takes ages to warm up these cold mornings. The tick over engine speed is then 1200rpm, too fast for comfort when driving through traffic.

My dealer tells me to switch the heater fan off. This does then bring the tick over down to a more manageable 1000rpm.

Should this be necccessary?

It is only when the engine is really warmed up after about 10 to 15 minutes or 4 to 5 miles that the heater switch no longer controls the engine speed.

Any helpful comments please?

Thanks, Brynbolt.

Aye, mine's the same as well. All car's rev higher when cold. Just think it's more noticable because it's a diesel.

Doesn't bother me tho, I just turn the stereo up a bit.

Thanks Carrera-C, and DaveSR I just find it odd that switching on and off the heater fan adjusts the engine speed.

No other electical switch does so even heated rear screen or air conditioning makes any difference at all to this.

Dosen't really bother me either as down south we always have lovely warm mornings!

PS how do you get Smilies on the text?
