Goodyear Excellence Tyres

 We all know that the Avensis has a bit of reputation for road noise and a choppy ride so it's nice to find some tyres that don't just claim to tackle these issues but actually deliver! I've just had a set of four Goodyear Excellence 17r215/45s fitted to my T-Spirit and I'm VERY impressed at the difference they've made. Road noise is noticably reduced (using the very scientific method of seeing what the volume level needs to be on the radio!) and the ride is much smoother - OK nothing is ever going to iron out the lumps and bumps on our roads but you can no longer feel the grain of the road coming through the floor pan. I've not pushed them too hard yet so I'm not sure what the grip is like but after scrubbing them in for a 100 miles or so they now feel pretty sticky.

Hope this is of some use.

Thanks,

which factory fit tyres did you have fitted before, the Dunlop SP2000's, or the Bridgestone Potenzas?

oh and what was the price :)

The OE tyres were Dunlop SP2000a and the Goodyears were £120 each (not cheap but definitely worth it) including fitting.

never heard of excellence, are they a run flat type ?

Used to have Goodyear F1 GSD3 on all my cars and they are very very good, and much cheaper than £120. I use the internet tyre traders with links to a fitting shop (e.g. black circles, value tyres)

If they're run flats it would explain the higher cost, although run flats tend to give a harsher ride.

I 'think' they are the new Goodyear Venturer's, or come in at the same price bracket and above the NCT's, Goodyear F1 varients as far as I can tell still sit on top of the Goodyear ladder.

They're quite new, and I think marketed as the "Eagle ResponsEdge" in the US. The F1 are sport tyres with the priority on grip and everything else (ie ride comfort, noise, etc) comes second where as these are touring tyres where a more balanced performance is wanted.

Here's the links to the appropriate pages on the Goodyear website:

I used Exellence 195/60 15' last year /spring - summer-autumn in total about 20k miles/...

Normal tyre without significant problems on it.

A little bit 'soft'. Previous tyre on the same car was Michelin HX1 (old one, model is more than 8 years old) and Michelin have more harder, but very exact drive...

Feeling on Goodyear during more extreme driving is like you drive on elastic....

During hard turn Exellence begin to 'open' the turn and increase radius of turn until the very moment, when it stops 'on limit of elastic' and after that it constantly maintain the grip and radius...

I think it is due to more elastic 'sides' of Goodyear if you compare it to Michelin HX1

I am not sure if i explained the feeling correctly...

Definitely it is good tyre to drive if you get used of small difference of driving due to above 'elastic' effect...

  • 2 months later...

My other car is a Mercedes A-Class. Also famous with the road noise. I have been using Goodyear Excellence since 8 months. The road noise reduction on the Excellence is awesome!. :P This is the new tyre from Goodyear to replace the NCT series. The noise reduction is mainly due to the fact that this is a very soft tire, meaning the wear will more than a 'hard' tire.. It is a trade-off between comfort and tire life.

On my Avensis, I am running the Potenzas but will get Excellence at replacement.
