New Gt4 Owners

Morning GT4 car gods,

A couple of newbie GT4 owners here! Me and my mate Mark just purchased 2 GT4's. One is black (mark's), and one is silver (steve's) - they are both the ST205 (gen6?) version, the black being a WRC model. They are also both 1994 plates, though the silver one is late 94 making it an M plate. This brings a few mods such as; sunroof, CD player, and extra front Speakers. The black WRC model has an HKS Powerflow filter and we think a mines ECU (Spools up quicker then the silver) and the silver only has a Baileys dump valve. I will get a few pics uploaded shortly in a new thread, and will point out a few differences we found in them.

Now we are official GT4 owners I'd like to start using this forum for help and advice (which I have already found from previous threads), and hope to share my experiences in modding these motors.

I get paid wednesday (cheer!) and will be buying my first mod - Airfilter. I was looking at a Blitz or HKS. The new blitz sonic filter looks goods, anyone used or seen a review on this? Whats it sound like on hard acceleration? Also when I get a nice £450 back from my previous insurance policy, and when I sell my old Paseo (£1200) Ill have a nice little figure to inject into the GT4. Any thoughts on sensible mods? Im not planning on forgies/steel headgaskets, just a gentle 300ish BHP - sensibly!

Cheers guys/gals - looking forward to talking.

Steve.

Northampton.

Firstly welcome to the club.

Secondly, congrats on the purchases to both of you! B)

Thirdly there are some basic steps to get you to your 300bhp mark as follows.

Get an after market exhaust (pref a decat as well)

Get a after market filter (as you have already mentioned)

2 ways of doing this. As you will find out, the 3SGTE engine gets very hot and very quick. For this reason I would not suggest a mushroom/cone filter unless you are going to box it off and get a cold air feed to it otherwise it will suck in hot air and lower performance. Most people tend to stick to an after market panel filter which is less restrictive than the standard one.

Once you have done the above, get a electronic boost controller and upp the boost to 1.1bar and you will feel a very noticeable difference in power. B)

I would then sort the fueling out with a Greddy E-manage or something similar.

With the above mods you should see 300bhp+ easy...

I had a cat back zorst + panel filter + boost upped to 1.1bar and the car made 275bhp and the same amount of torque.

Hey mate Congrats on the purchases and WTTC to both of your

Black is obviously the best colour :D

As fizz said re upgrades for 300bhp, you'll also want to think about a full and proper service including all of the following.

Spark Plugs

HT Leads

Dizzy Cap

Rotor Arm

Fuel Filter

Oil Filter and Oil(Full synthetic such as Silkolene Pro S 10W50)

I'd also suggest upgrading the Fuel pump to a walbrow 255l/min jobbie... Athough not strictly nessecary for 300BHP the stock pump is gonna be 13 years old now and probably seen better days...

Also get the Charge Cooler washed out with petrol and lagged with heat resistant matting, that'll help keep the inlet temps down alot.

If you decide to go with a cone filter I'd suggest the Apexi Power intake kit, can get them for around £100 on eBay for the ST205 specific kit and although they are very slightly down on power compaired to the Blitz the filtering abilities are immensly different, there was a link to a group test on here a while back and it was quite shocking to see the amount of crap the blitz etc let through compaired to the apexi.

Regarding the Mines ECU, would like to see some pics of that not heard of Mines doing one for the GT-Four before normally any changed ECU on JDM cars seem to be the Blitz Access ECU which is a reprogrammed version of the Stock Toyota Denso Unit.

Up to 1.1 bar is safe on the stock turbo and ecu above that you seriously need to think about altered fuelling, turbo etc.

The stock fuel cut is 1.2 bar, please don't be tempted to fit a fuel cut defender as the limit is there for a reason. The stock ecu maps run out at 1.2 bar and then you in guess man's teritory. An the ones that just raise the limit rather than completely removing it are just as bad no matter what anyone tells you.

The ST205 is a speed density fueling system and bases most of it's calculations on the engine speed and MAP sensor reading, anything that "Adjusts" this signal is telling the ecu fibs and hence will be causing it to run for one situation when it should be running for another. This is bad...

anyway not wanting to end a post on a bad point WTTC again and hope your cars bring you as much happyness as mine has me... :D

WTTC guys. :yahoo: Shame you had to buy 205s, but I won't hold that against you. :P The rest of the Gen 6 brigade will tell you whats best for your cars. Hope you enjoy your stay and your cars.

Think Fizz and Sketchy covered it all, but welcome to the club anyways

EBC @ 1.1 Bar, Exhaust & Downpipe, Filter and a good service should see a healthy engine putting out in the region of 300 bhp B)

if you want a health check doing on them i can reccomend ian at Toyauto centre in nottingham (0115 9787844). for £35 each he will go over them and point out any areas that are likely to need attention and a general report on the condition (plus any mods that have been carried out or need sorting due to poor fitting) the £35 is refunded if you have any work needed done there.

ian knows more about gt4s than anyone else in the country and himself owns a 624bhp ST-205.

congrats on the purchace and welcome to the forums

both look good buddy.

i would consider making a partition for the airfilter though to sheild it from the engine bay, youll get more power doing it as well

A friend of a friend is a stainless steel specialist. Going to ask him if he can make something up to box it off. Its a little tight in there though with the Battery right in front of it, doesn't give alot of room for a cold air feed.

if you leave the std plasic pipe in and remove the resonance box from behind the bumper it works quite well

Nice choice in colour... Silver is the way to go man! :)

As Lee (aka Dawsey) said, get it boxed off as the engine bay gets HOT!

And the next mod you need is to pinch your mates WRC spoiler! A GT4 aint a 'propper' GT4 till it has the high rise spoiler matey... :P

Wheels have to come next, tyre tread is rock bottom. Im going for SSW Stamford - Mesh, hyper black, polished rim.

Found some spoiler blocks on e-bay. about £120-130 for a pair of black ones with GT FOUR engraved. (look like rubber or carbon fibre). They come from Hong Kong - ummm, wonder if they will be a 'cut and shut' jobbie, or a 'wamb bam thank you mam - everyones happy' job. Any experiences, or pay the extra money for genuine Toyota blocks?
