Time has come for some work on the Celica...

need an oil change, brake fluid flush & replace with DOT 5.1 and front & back pads.

now the question is in this current weather & no garage do i fork out 90+VAT to get someone else to do it for me or do i save my hard earnt cash & do it myself...

I used to work on the Cynos so can probably do everything myself once i have a guide/manual- i was too scared to work on the Zed

Everything is easily doable apart from the brake fluid replacement, you can buy a pressure bleeder yourself but I always found the cheapo versions were a bit messy and the possibility of a seal reversal due to the pressure being too high put me off so I always let the garage do that.

I would do it if I were you. The pads are probably the easiest in the world to change, did mine in less than 30mins inc. jacking!

I replaced my brake fluid with DOT 5.1 and have had no problems, didn't use anything other than a jar and small piece of tubing... oh and a helping hand. Not sure if there is something else I should've done but it worked a treat.

Hi,

as said above the Celicas pads are the easiest I've ever seen to replace.

Two bolts at the front, remove the caliper, hang it out of the way.

Then just lever the pads from their clips.

Rears have just one bolt and the caliper can then be swung upwards to lever out the pads.

Bleeding should be straightforward if you can open the nipples, members have tipped me off to use heat and plus gas on them if rusty.

Tricky to get the fluid in the master cylinder though as the strut brace is in the way, can be removed if needed.

cheers

Cheers guys

picked up front & back pads last night so going to give it a go this weekend - depending on weather.

Does anyone know what oil i should use? 94 ss1 with 114000 miles on the clock?

Decent 10w40 will do nicely. Castrol Magnatex something like that will do nicely.

DIY mate. You've gotta learn and once you know how to do it you're going to find that you're doing it more often and saving £££

I'd also recommend 10w-40 GTX Magnetec.

Be careful with the rear caliper bolt as mine sheared very easily and car was off the road for a week whilst I drilled and re-tapped the thread. TCB wanted something silly like £60 for the caliper carrier alone if I couldn't fix it myself.
