Hi there...can you shed any light on my problem...when my Rav4 is cold and I put the gear into reverse the car shudders repeatedly when going backwards...this stops when the car and transmission warm up....the same thing happens abeit very rarely in first gear when pulling away from a junction, when on light throttle...again this dissapears when the car is hot...another slight irk is a repeated lurch on very light throttle when just covering the peddle...I spoke to Toyota who want lots of money just to look at the car and I know that out there is someone who has experienced the same problems...Thanking you all in anticipation...either post a reply or p.m. me

When was the transmission fluid & gear box oil changed in you RAV4, as this can effect gear changes. Mine is a bit tight sometimes in the mornings...

Full Toyota Service last year in july and only 4.000 miles since...toyota tell me they all do this but I think they dont have a clue and I dont want to throw lots of money at it if it is not going to break, as I am used to it but it is annoying when it happens...the car only does about 80 miles a week...with a 120 mile motorway thrash once a month.

I think you have a contaminated clutch plate. This possibly caused by a rear crankshaft or gearbox input oil seal. You will have to have the gearbox removed to find out.

Good luck

I have had this little problem for Two years and the previous owner for a year also, Toyota keep telling me that there is nothing they can find, and they said that it would judder all the time if there was any contamination on the clutch but it stops when it gets hot...I had the suspension replaced by Toyota under a recall notice and this made no difference...I am at a loss and do not want to take the gearbox/transfer box off to find nothing...it is not an easy job.

As well as being a fully qualified mechanic, I have been in friction material development and testing for OE manufacturers of 17 years and I can assure you that a contaminated clutch is affected by temperature. The Toyota representative is quite wrong as it all depends upon the level of contamination. A partially contaminated clutch may work fine at normal temperature but will be fiercly aggressive when cold. It causes a lack of progression and very inconsistent friction. The judder is a function of the clutch taking up the slack in the transmission and the transmission reacting in the opposite direction. A more contaminated clutch will inevitably slip.

However, it is not impossible for it to be something else like an engine mounting or flywheel/input shaft misalignment but I really think you're going to have to bite the bullet and have the box out for a "looksee"!

Are you going to tackle it yourself?

Regards

As it has been doing the same thing for the better part of 3 years I will leave it alone until it finaly pops....I have noticed a small occasional drop of oil that drips from the rear of the engine drivers side onto the exhaust...if this had been a Ford it would have died long ago...I have been quoted £800.00 for a stripdown and new seal including new clutch...I have just got married and this is a lot of money to spend on something that is not so urgent...I do not fancy having a go myself even though I am a good mechanic myself...not having the right environment to do the work is a problem.....I do not trust the likes of Toyota, they told me the whistle from the wing mirror on the Yaris was a "feature of the car and not realy a problem" as was the groaning Clutch....both were replaced under warranty and they are fine now...

I roared laughing about your experience with the whistling mirror :D

It really is bewildering isn't it. I phoned a local Toyota garage on behalf of a friend for a price for an exhaust on a 1.4 Corolla.

They kept me waiting for several hours so in the meantime I phoned another dealer (part of the same group) who told me straight away that they would do the exhaust and a joining sleeve for £190.80

Meanwhile the first dealer came back and said £335.27 for the exhaust and sleeve and £123.38 for fitting it!

£458.68 for fitting a back box

The strange thing is that when you are at adealer and watch people come in to collect their car they just get the cheque book out and pay while thanking them.

I don't think I could look somebody in the face and take their money like that and then when they say that whistling mirrors are characteristic you just feel like saying :censor: I'll have a Nissan and see if that cures it.

They fitted parking sensors to my new RAV and succeeded in disconnecting the seat folding lever from its cable and filling the boot with tie wraps and oily boot prints. Quite frankly I don't trust them either.

Regards

I was out in the hills of derbyshire yesterday with my Rav4 doing a spot of greenlaning...the recent hard rain has left a lot of good tracks needing some serious attention...there was a lot of deep ruts and lots of water....Yes I off road my Rav and despite the judder in reverse the car is very capable...talking Toyota Garages...every service I pay and walk away with the Mot and the Bill...the car has never let me down and therefore I never have to rummage in amongst the boot trays...imagine my horror then whilst trying to find some washer fluid for the Yaris, to find two one litre bottles of premium oil in the yaris boot and one in my bit box...all charged as top ups when the cars were Serviced and Mot'd and at £11.00 a litre...I suppose then if I complain that this will also be a "feature of the car" :yahoo::yahoo: Its good to talk to you thanks for the advise
