Anyone Else Had To Get Their Engine Decoked ?

I have a 3.3 year old Avensis tourer 2.0 vvti with < 30k miles on clock.

Basically have had repeated oxygen sensors replaced - current count is 6 or 7 - I forget !

Toyoyta suggested a decoke of the engine - which apparently showed severe carbon deposits on the values and injectors - which have now been replaced under the ext warranty I took out.

Their explanation was down to the low mileage of the car and number of relatively shory journies. Which to me does not sound right as we do average miles

Anyone else had a similar decoking or any views as to the cause etc ?

Many thanks

Soon after I bought my 51 reg 2.0 vvti in 2004 the engine malfunction light kept coming on and, after a couple of attempts at unsucccessfully erasing the fault codes, the dealer took it in for an engine management software upgrade and decoke. To my knowledge none of the oxygen sensors was replaced. The problem has not recurred. Hope they solve your problem!

Any idea how much a Decoke costs?

My wife gets a fair bit of black smoke on starting and dealer said its not a problem its just carbon build up. Its quite off putting really, id like to get it sorted and the car does have an extended warrenty but they havent suggested and sort of decoke.

Its also a 2001 2.0 vvti with 34k on clock, so again small journeys, didnt know if a change of plugs and leads might help out.

Sounds like all it really needs is an Italian tune-up! Mine gets one at least once a week, same model and year. Just give it a good thrashing now and again, not redlining it but quite high up the rev range and give it a bit of a blast on a motorway.

My local Toyota dealership look about 7 hours to do the whole job - I saw the mechanics job sheet ! So cost that up at some ridiculous hourly rate and you'll get the idea ! Thank goodness for the ext warranty

So far the ehgine light has stayed off - and they also advised ragging the @rse of it occassionally

are you using a lot of oil ???

if so high oil consumption will cause a sensor fault and light up the cel and also toyota know they have made a few duff engines but its cheaper to replace when a customer causes the stealership grief !!!

try fuel injector cleaner ??

Last June I bought a three year old T4 1.8 Auto Hatchback with 26000 miles on the clock from a local independant dealer with a 1 year warrenty as Toyota one expired.

Within a mile of the dealer the engine management light came on, but at this time we were on the motorway. So the car is taken into the Toyota garage at the dealers expense one week later. Toyota say its a glitch. They reset it. Two days later, it comes on again, they say its a sensor, sensor replaced. On the way home the light comes on again, they say its the ECU, £1000 work (at dealers expense). Then would you believe it, 3 days later, the light comes on again, the catalytic converter had died due to the ECU breaking it.

Yes it was a bit of a nightmare and made our old car of 4 years, the Daewoo Nubira 2.0 CDX look alot more reliable, only having had £300 suspension work.

Unfortunatly i was driving on a local main road [in the avensis] just 3 months ago when a boy racer clipped the back of my car, the back end kicked out and I went into the path of a bus on my side. Whole chassis was bent but the superb toyota side protection literally saved my life.

I'm now in the process of buying another Avensis, even though reliabity has been an issue!
