Most Know The Gearbox/flywheel Probs On Avensis

Hi, Various models suffered from gearbox failures on the 98- early 2003 petrol engines, and flywheel probs on the D-4D.

When my brothers 2001 1.8 vvti gearbox started breaking up, we replaced it with a recon celica vvti gearbox. this is a 6sp from the 200bhp or so celica with a celica clutch, and i'll tell you its so much better and fuel consumption is also improved in my opinion. Also the gearing is spot on, bearing in ming the engine in the celica is the same, but tuned so the gearbox works a treat with the avensis and pulls so much better.

just thought i would share this because as i know it, its a fairly common problem, and also once replaced with the celica running gear the problem wont re-occur.

oh btw i dont know if it would work on the d-4d, as different engine i would guess it wouldn't.

Hi Paul, it goes straight in with the only thing needed is the celica gearbox and clutch.

same flywheel, half shafts, gear shifter even.

Its a treat to drive.

Can you say a bit about the D-4D problems? It's new to me. Do they still occur or have they been fixed?

Thanks

Not too sure about the d4d problems, but as i know the model from 98- early 2003 had the following problems. petrol engine gearbox's would break up, and the fly wheel's on the d4d would warp or fail. im not sure if the d4d also had probs with the gearbox but i think its just a flywheel.

As these were a design fault they affected all models just a matter of case when they went, but again this is more the case with the petrol and im not too sure about the diesel.

The gearing is closer with the celica gearbox, makes the engine rev more freely. Also the revs sit higher at normal driving speeds in lower gears giving a better throttle response. but the this does not impact MPG, when in 6th gear the gearing is longer so the car generally revs lower in top gear at higher speeds.

Thanks - looks like I don't need to worry then if it was sorted post 2003.

if you got the newer shape avensis i think you should be ok. but haven't heard of any problems on the newer shape avensis gearbox/flywheel.
