Probably the thrust bearing in the clutch. It will drive like this for ages without causing problems. My Carina has a simliar problem.

It only occurs in 1st and if you release the clutch very gently there is no noise. Generally only occurs from cold. If that's the same for you, It will be the same fault. Mine has been doing it for 9months. I'm planning to do the clutch at some point but there is no rush.

Is it the thrust / release bearing OR the spigot bearing that reputedly causes this problem?

I have the same problem with the noise(on a 1999 1.6 Avensis), in fact, exactly as you describe. I thought it was the spigot bearing and that it woudn't get any worse (and it hasn't) but if it's the release bearing, I'd want to get skates on and do something about it!

This is the advice I received:

I checked this with a local clutch fast-fit garage who confirmed the diagnosis.

This may be of interest:

My noise is ONLY as the clutch is released and hasn't got any worse. I know that moving off will produce the greatest amount of stress but I still would have expected SOME noise for gears other than first?

I can understand why you think it may be the spigot bearing. I hadn't considered this. Again the maximum stress on the input shaft would be in first and this may cause a slight squeel as the clutch is released. But as the bearing is in constant contact with the input shaft I would expect noise at other times as well?

Either way - unless the problem deteriorates I'm leaving the clutch in situ until the spring/summer. I will closely check the spigot bearing when I do the job. Thanks for the tip.

I've never had any noise in reverse though? But this doesn't really surprise me even if there is wear on both bearings.

Cheers Gazza. I heard from someone else that it was possibly the spigot bearing.

One thing that strikes me though, if soneone with this problem brings in the car to get this problem fixed, they will probably get the release bearing, spigot bearing, pressure plate and disc replaced.

In reality this noise could also be caused by some distortion of the pressure plate or even more likely, by a small crack or wear of the driven disc. As probably everyone who has had this problem has had all 4 items replaced and this makes complete sense as the labour element is clearly the significant cost, I wonder has anyone really got a definite diagnosis as to which individual part causes the problem.

I'm only asking as the labour to do this will be my own (free!!). If I was sure the problem wasn't possibly something invisible on the pressure plate or disc, I'd be inclined to leave them alone. In my case, it's the wifes car... only doing small and very local mileage. It would be good enough as it is, if I was sure it wouldn't cave in altogether!.

Thanks again for your reply.
