Many Questions

Ok, I would like some answers for some questions/problems regarding our families Hiace Supercustom 2.4 turbo diesel.

1. Our Hiace has 3 sunroofs/moonroofs, the furthest rear electric tilt one does not work, it makes a whirring noise like I imagine it should, the blinds retract automatically but the roof will not lift.

2. Our car has electric curtain rails, unfortunatly only the boot hooks move and there is no movement on the side hooks. Also no curtains are fitted, are these as rare as they were on our townace or are they more readily available? Why are there 2 rails on either side, one in between the windows and another going the full length of the side?

3. The reverse lights don't work on the car, we tried changing bulbs which made no difference, does anybody know of other fixes to this?

4. Is the center of the rear (the part surrounding the number plate and on the tailgate part) supposed to act as another brake light or just for show?

5. The interior of the hiace is a thick pile type material that is proving hard to clean  , can anyone suggest a good cleaning method or any products that can help, does this call for...Cillit Bang!

6. The Hiace has the digital dash, on all the cars we looked at for sale before, we noticed that they had more icons and gauges and in different places. Is this right for our model or is there something wrong with ours. For example, when in the right light you can see that there are spaces for an ECT icon but when the ECT is on, no icon comes up.

Another problem with the dash is that a light saying 'O/D off' is flashing on and off, the overdrive is switched on at the gear lever and the car drives as though there is overdrive on so is this an electrical problem?

7. Another (sort of) regarding the dash. When should the TEMS icon change and what is it usually supposed to be on? Ours never appears to change from hard.

8. (Probably most important as we are visiting London on a Saturday!) I posted earlier about a stalling problem that our (auto) hiace has. We are going to change fuel and oil filters the day before we leave, is there anything else that may be causing it? I read somewhere about fuel pump timing, could this be a cause?

Sorry for such an unbelievably  long post but its easier to ask them all together!

Thank you very very much beforehand for answers.

If I can, I will update with pictures tomorrow to help with some questions.

Kyle

Hi -

The side curtains on mine took a bit of WD40 (thin spray oil) on the tracks and some draging back and forth manually to get them going when i got the van, as for the curtains - i havn't seen any for sale yet but it might be worth trying a toyota dealer - despite the common belief that bits for imports are hard to get toyota seem to be able to get every bit for these hiaces in about 3 days ! - not too expensive either.

The ect light should be on when you are in ect mode - sounds like a dodgy connection to me - if ect is working you should notice the gearbox changing gear at higher revs than normal.

The tems icon should normally be on soft (if it changes automatically) and it usually changes to hard when the brakes are applied (i think its meant to stop the suspension diving when you hit the breaks) but some models have a switch to change it manually.

Your overdrive light sounds like a warning -sorry to quote the obvious but have you checked the gearbox oil (should be on the top mark when cold and not running)

As for the stalling - you might have a blocked or partially blocked injector - try putting some injector cleaner in with the diesel - dont buy the cheep £6 stuff it never works spend as much as you can afford - the one i always use comes from Halfords in a metal bottle called winns extreem (costs about 15 but will clean anything out !) - worth trying even if your filters do the trick - it will make quite an amazing difference.

hope some of this helps

Andy

Yes the overdrive light is a warning, and that's why I posted the link for you to find the problem.

Not sure where you will find the auto gearbox dipstick on the Hiace, but it normally has an orange handle, and the engine oil is yellow, but the engine should be running when it's checked and the gearbox should have just been used, the dipstick will have hot and cold marks on it, the hot one is the higher mark, also if you need to put more ATF in the system it goes in the dipstick tube where you remove the stick.

I would recommend that you get the gearbox ATF flushed if it has not been done recently.

Ok, the last 2 days I have been going through the car and doing bits on it.

Yesterday, we changed the fuel filter, the old one was full of rust and had disintergrated inside! The filter wouldnt come off of the priming pump part on top, which made things fun, the whole thing got very dented from the chain! Eventually it came off with a hammer and chisel through the middle. :o

Then we emptied the oil, surprising how little oil the engines need really compared to other cars we've had. It all went ok with that part.

After that, the oil filter had to be changed, which was another drama! Who at toyota thought it was a good idea to put a exhaust pipe on one side and other pipes on the other  . That also eventually came off and was replaced.

Filled it up with fresh oil again, bit too much but it'll be fine.

Also checked the gearbox oil which was at a fine level, so this means that it will either be a fault or a loose connection which we will check soon.

Today I spent my whole day cleaning the car, waxing it and then using that bumper and trim blackener on too. It looks very shiny B)

Does anyone know where I can get some touch up paint for the bottom half of the car and some marroon paint or lacquer for the top half?

Thank you,

Kyle

Another update:

Today, I spent the day inside the car scrubbing the interior, still not finished and have only done about half

Also I got the electric curtain rail on the right next to the middle row working today but no others yet (apart from the tailgate). If anyone else is trying to fix theirs, I recommend WD-40 or similar (as Moogdrew did) and it got the one rail whizzing accross.

Earlier on today I had the curtain rail on the sliding door working but thats given up now, I've coated them all in WD again for the night to let it do its magic!

My mum started the engine up today while I was working and it was sounding very smooth, but it took a while to start after having the door lights on for ages when we changed filters and oil. Needs a good run and it should be better. We are going to get some injector cleaner too just to see if it helps as well.

Can anybody tell me if when the digital dash was converted to MPH it could have lost the electric suspension and icons because ours is always on 'hard' with no noticable difference when driving.

Thank you very much for all the help so far, still not done yet so if anybody else knows answers to questions please help :)
