anybody had to buy tyres for 06 rav yet?

all local tyre dealers quoting £120.00 yokahama £93.00 Bridgestone. ive noticed vitara has same size

so hopefully the more demand wil mean more tyre manufactures will make this size and bring price down

(bought some for mitsubishi shogun for £60.00)

Bought 1 Bridgestone a month ago from my local C&S Tyres for £80 because my tyre had a tear in it :crybaby: so i changed it with my Yokahama spare and then used the new Bridgestone as my spare tyre..

This has emerged on another thread, in relation to the New XTR model with no spare. The owners of these will have to contend with trying to obtain one of these tyres in a hurry, if they ruin a tyre. I will be cahnging to 235/65/17 when mine get low. There is a vast choice for this size. Checking with a size calculator this size will only give a marginal speedo error of about +1 mph at 70. As most speedos read under anyway this shouldn't present too much of a problem. They are also a gret deal cheaper in this size. Rich.

Rav man.I am a novice in these matters. How do you know that these alternative Tyres will fill fit and perform O.K. I am expecting to pick up my new XTR on Monday but have opted to buy a full sized spare. I will put up with the inconvenience of carrying it in the boot rather than risk a ripped tyre and the problems associated with finding a replacement quickly.Any pearls of wisdom re alternative tyre sizes will be filed away for future use.

Jock.

The change in size is minimal. The width of the tyre is 10mm extra over standard i,e 235mm instaed of 225mm. The height of the tyre is expressed as a percentage of the width. In this case 65%, so the 235 tyre will be slightly bigger in diameter and circumference. Rochford tyres and other tyre suppliers have 'tyre size calculators' on their sites. There is plenty of clearance around the tyre to fit a slightly larger one. A tyre 10mm wider will obviously be 5mm wider in each direction, so it will only go inboard 5mm.

Looking on some tyre sites the other night the choice of 235 tyres is vast as opposed to 225's of which i have only been able to find three. I also wanted a slightly more agressive tread (all the 225's being road biased). Cost is also a factor. The 235's start at about £80 the 225's £100.

Toyota themselves also fit different tyres depending on model. The standard XT's run on 17" and the T180 on 18". Its a matter of personal choice if you like the Bridgestone D687, Yokohama G91AH or the Michelin lattitude tour then i would stick with the original size.

Hpe this helps, Rich.

mr2 owners have the same dialema , most switched to an alternate size as near to stock size as possible but half the price for the same quality . in most cases with no adverse affects at all .

Thanks rav man. This is a great help.Which Tyres are you favouring for your next lot? Do manufacturer select tyre sizes purely for optimum performance for the specific model or does cost savings come in to it?To the novice, like myself, the235's would appear to be the better bet because they put slightly more rubber on the road?

I'm sure that Bridgestone and Yokohama are going to do well out of Toyota using this size. They effectively have a captive market. If your able to change to the 235's you obviously get a great deal more choice of pattern and price. I will be swapping my rears to the front shortly so they wear out at about the same time. The only drawback with doing this is the expense of changing all 4 at the same time. As far as which to choose next i quite like the look of the Pirelli scorpion A/T, the Toyo 103H open country, Bridgestone H/T D684 and the Michelin syncrone. All have a slightly more open tread pattern but none are too extreme.

Have you considered trying to source a space saver spare from the Avensis verso, which from looking at alloy wheel charts appears to have the same PCD (bolt pattern), offset and centre size. Rich.

Thanks once again Rich.I will file this info.I have committed to buying a full size spare to keep in the boot. The Avensis Idea looks a good option.I must look at some way of anchoring the spare in the boot with a locking device. If not ,in a shunt god forbid,I may end up wearing the Spare!

Just a word of warning the Insurance company should be told of the change, they are touchy about changes to the makers specification on tyres and wheels. Most are ok if you let them know, particulary where it can be shown the tyre will not affect performance or be more "knickable". However you wouldn't want them to reduce/refuse a claim would you.

  • 2 weeks later...

Noticed a post on a Suzuki web site the other day about sourcing tyres (the new one uses the same 225/65. 17) as the 4.3 Rav's . The poster said he needed a new tyre and no delers in Scotland had any Bridgestones in stock and had to order one in taking days. He managed to source a Yokohama in the same size eventually, but i think this highlights the problems owners will encounter. Some tyre sites do not even list this size. Rich.
