The bracket that holds the sensor that leads into my cat has come loose.. I've taken it to my local exhaust specialist and they say they would either have to replace the cat, or remove the sensor. Does anyone know what this sensor does? And can i live without it? removing the sensor is 1/5 the price of a new cat..

More than likely it is the oxygen sensor. And you certainly cannot live without it.

Id question why they have to do one or the other.

But if it's your CAT sensor (a temp one to make sure it's not overheating) - it's not needed.

When you gut the cat you leave it in place. If you have a replacement pipe, you need to tie it up.

If you remove it it causes problems.
