i've decided that as i'm net getting a gt4 anytime soon i would have a go at amking my ST a bit better.

so, what is best to do?

and i'm kind of a !Removed! when it comes to doing things under the bonnet so instructions would be useful

Panel filter would be best unless you get a cold air feed from the bumper to the induction kit.

I presume you want it for the noise rather than the performace aspect?

well i do have an ST, so theres not that much performance anyway. so yes i would like it all show and no go.

They do make a great sound, i had a k&n on my 1994 GT and the suction sound it made was great. Just dont go and run over any deep puddles as the water will be sucked into the engine should it splash onto the filter like it happend to me!!! :censor:

Heard a big bang and the car just died for a few mins... wouldnt start up at all and had to pull over to the side...

Eventually all the ater had evaporated after a bit and the car continued on just fine.. :!Removed!:

The k&n induction kit does sound awesome, I don't know whether it increases powerful or not, but feels more responsive. I routed my cold air feed to the bottom of the car by cutting a hole in the undertray and pointing it into the direction of the air flow, set back from the bumper by about 500mm. There was nowhere in the bumper to put it without cutting holes in it, I don't know if the gen 6 is different in that respect. I've never had any problems with big puddles what-so-ever, the cone is pretty well shielded from the elements. You may have a different experience if the air feed goes into the airbox and have a panel filter, and you go through a deep puddle, if the feed is submerged you might start sucking up water like through a straw!

Mine had the undertrays missing hence why i had the problem! :lol: and yeah although it dont give you power gains the throttle reponse 'seems' to be better but that could be just a placebo effect. :P

Just a thought, but wouldn't drilling the airbox defeat the whole point of having an air box in the first place? The airbox shields the air taken in from the warm engine bay air. Drilling the box removes that protection to a certain extent, so you might as well go for the cone filter that allows more air to flow into the engine. I don't know about the gen6, but the intake into the gen 5 air box is rubish, it takes the air from behind the headlight, not exactly the ram affect, eh? If yours is like the gen 5, you're probably gonna have to run another air feed anyway regardless of whether you go induction or panel to get any real benefit.

Can under bonnet retards mod air boxes, lol! :D

Wrapping your manifold & downpipe should help reduce under bonnet temps if you go for the induction kit, that's what I plan to do soon, but only do so if it's tubular CS or stainless, I believe cast ones can't take the extra heat build up and may crack although I am NOT speaking from experience, just throwing some ideas in.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong people.

I've drilled holes in mine but as I didn't want to suck in too much warm air I only drilled 8 small holes ranging from 4 to 10mm. It's enough to get a slight increase in induction sound but the restriction is far to great to divert the majority of the air away from its proper course.

Removing the resonator box also helps a little.

Right, i have ordered a K&N panel filter and i'm gonna drill the airbox, a friend told me to put a cold air feed towards the bottom of the airbox. i dont know if this will work, if it doesnt i'll just have to get an induction kit instead.

if anyone can send pics of how to remove the resinator box i would be very greatful.

do they use much more petrol? or are they just about the same?

i've been thinking about putting a cone filter on, with a cold air feed

but the petrol costs are bad anuff :crybaby:

I have a cone filter on my Gen4 and to be honest I'm getting more MPG than the standard filter.. Also if you remove the wadding from under the hood you tend to lose a lot of engine bay heat through the hood... That makes it a little cooler in there... Wrapping the manifold is a good idea... Just my 2 cents worth..
