2004 Avensis Wheel Fitment

I have a 2004 Avensis T2, and last summer invested in some nice new alloy wheels.

The wheels are the 6-spoke type used on previous model Avensis CDX.

The wheels look great, but I'm not convinced that the handling is as good as it was before I fitted the alloys. The car feels vague when cornering (despite tyre pressure, balance and tracking being spot on).

As I understand it the wheel spec for the 2004 Avensis is 6.5 x 16 ET 45 PCD 5 x 100 Bore 54.1 (based on T3S alloys). I'm not entirely sure of the specification for the alloys I bought, but understand that the spec is roughtly as follows: 6.5 x 16 ET 35-42 PCD 5 x 100 Bore 54.1.

I guess the question I am asking is what are the implications of the difference between an ET of 45 and an ET of 35 - 42. Would this affect the handling?

Any help appreciated

Cheers Woodie

My new wheels have an offset of 39mm. The original wheel had an offset of 45mm.

Everything else remains the same.

Does anyone know, based on the above, do I need to fit a 5mm spacer, or will this make things worse?
