Immobiliser Problem After Battery Disconnection

Hello all

I'm new to this forum and am hoping someone may be able to help me with a problem.

It's a UK spec 1997 RAV4 Manual. It has two large key fobs but no remote control locking.

Today I completed a timing belt change for which I disconnected the Battery, on re-connecting it it wouldn't start and there was a very quiet clicking sound in exactly the rythm of an alarm going off. It's as though somone has disconnected the alarm siren but the immobiliser has kicked in.

For an experiment I disconnected the Battery put the key in the ignition, turned it all the way to the 'run' position then reconnected the Battery and lo, I urned the key that last little bit and it started perfectly. The only trouble is after I switched it off I was back to square one -ticking sound and won't start until I run the battery trick again.

Any help much appreciated.

I'm not sure I can help you with this as I am not so familiar with 4.1 or 2 models. I thought that the immobiliser was only operated by recognising the chipped key in the ignition switch pick up. In other words disconnecting the Battery should not have an affect.

Is there an alarm that has been disconnected or had the sounder switched off?

Have you tried both keys?

Regards

Hi All,

I have the RAV4 auto, I have the same problem, I was away and the Battery went flat, that set the alarm off, the Battery was flat for a month, after recharging the engine would only start if I turned the key then connected the Battery “OR POPPED THE BATTARY LEAD OFF AND ON” a few times, I could hear the relay chatter, the engine only runs for about 10 seconds, question, did you find a solution or where is the immobiliser located?.

Cheers Gene,

:ffs:
