Steering Knocking While Reversing With Full Lock

Hi,

I bought my car from new less than a year ago and everything was fine except for one thing.

When reversing with full steering lock the steering wheel jolts as if it keeps hitting something on the wheels as the car moves back.

Ive taken it back to the dealership to fix but they said that its just the steering rack rubbing against the wheels, it happens on all MR2 Roadsters and that I shouldnt reverse with full steering lock! He said it wont damage anything but I not so sure and it is worrying.

Is the dealership telling the truth? Does the steering knock when reversing with full lock? Will it damage anything as time goes on?

Thanks in advance

Yep, mine does it too. Thought I'd run something over first time, but haven't really worried about it since. My car's 6 years old and no previous problems with steering rack wear & tear etc...

Yes, our 2000 roadster has also always done this when reversing with full (usally left) lock on.

The strut top bearings on the suspension can cause this type of noise and there are modified power steering pipes available as the old pipes generate a 'knock' due to fluid pressure

One of the main reasons for this “knock” is cold weather and cold tyres, mine does it all the time, it’s just the tread snatching when wheels are in full lock, when the weather gets warmer you should find the knocking will stop, one way to check that it is the tyres, just do a little spirited cornering to get them warm then try it again.

As far as a dealer saying that it’s normal for a tyre to rub on ANYTING in full lock I’m afraid they are conversing bovine excreta. ;)
