Glue!

At last I have taken the plunge and my new carbon quartz XT-R diesel has arrived. Had the style and protection packs fitted and the roof rails too. After years of worthy but dull Saabs I have entered my second childhood and ,so far, touch wood, I am delighted with the Rav.I have not encounterd the notchy lower gear change or harsh ride over uneven roads that I have read about on these pages and am very encouraged by my first week's ownership. I'm so glad I did not plump for the new CR-V. I have bitten the bullet re. the "no spare" situation .I've bought a spare and will keep it in the shed at home. The only slight problem I have,so far, is that I notice that the front driver's side plastic bumper protection strip is not properly glued down where it bends round the body shape. This is not serious enough on it's own to bother the main dealer. I'm sure I will find something more serious for him eventually! I wonder if any of you more practical blokes know which glue the manufactures/dealers use for these jobs, perhaps I could take care of it myself.

Jock,

Get the dealer to do it, if you make a mess of it you'll be stuck with it (pardon the pun) as the dealer won't touch it later. Accessories are also covered by the 3 year warranty. There is a section in the service manual to get stamped when you have accessories fitted, this obviously shows they were genuine and will make any claim easier. Does the protection pack include the plastic cover for the top of the rear bumper, if not i would highly recomend it. Why this isn't a standard item i don't know. (what colour roof bars did you go for black or silver ?).

Rich.

Rich thanks for advice. No, only have the narrow rear sill cover and what appears to be a thin painted film over the bumper.I presume you are talking about the more substantial plastic sill cover, that covers the top of the sill completely, shown in the brochure? I'll have a look at that. I have the black roof rails fitted ,these seem to go well with the dark grey colour. of the car.

Wish Toyota had a more substantial illustrated spares brochure,I am sure they are missing a trick there.Lots of Rav owners seem proud of their vehicles and add ons.If you are not sure of what's available , their not going to sell much.

jock, I have a T180 and have put on all the usual aftermart accesories, ( side-bars, front-bar, rear-bar). I got hold of a rear bumper protection cover off E/Bay from W/Riding Toyota. Two things to be aware of - They are very hard to get hold of due to the fact that they are not a "recognised" UK accesory, plenty in Europe but not UK.( keep looking on E/Bay they do appear occasionly).

The other thing to be aware of is that they are mean,t for the Rav4 models with the spare wheel on the rear door, as the rear lip is longer than that of the T180(no spare). I must admit I don,t know on you XTR whether it is the same size as the T180 or the XT,s so bear that in mind. They certainly do work( I adjusted mine to fit the T180) save a lot of scratches and knocks

Clare

The one i refer to does cover the rear bumper and sticks down. It really does protect the painted sill. (especially when the dog gets in and out). I have noticed the ones on E Bay Claire refers to but cannot comment on the size. I guess it depends where your rear number plate is. The Xt's are under the rear bumper the 180's on the door.

Rich and Claire. Thanks for replies. The XT-R has a similar door to the 180 ie.No spare, fully opening and number plate on door. looks as though it may be a viable option.Claire what did you look under on eBay?

Rich. Re.Bumper protection plate.Have had a look and don't think the plate as you describe it would fit with the reversing sensors fitted where they are. Think this forum is brilliant,do other makes have these?

Jock,

I have rear reversing sensors, (Toyota gen parts, 4 sensors across rear bumper ) The protection plate i refer to is about £45 from Toyota and sits along the top of the bumper across the door gap. It doesn't hang down so shouldn't get in the way of sensors. R.

Thankyou !

There are forums for just about every car you could think of somewhere on the internet. Sometimes ( especially with more 'exotic' cars ) it's the only realistic way of finding information and spares.

Forums are only as good as the people who frequent them though.......thankfully we have a vast collection of friendly and knowledgable members !
