Tyre Change Time....

Hello all :yahoo:

Just wanted to put this one out to discussion....

My T4 54reg Avensis came with 215/45/R17 Dunlop Tyres...

I have decided to change these as the front ones are quite worn and the rear ones...well there is only one Dunlop on the rear the other is a different make.

So the idea is to change them all at the same time.

The tyres I was looking at are Falken ZE 512 ones, now what I wanted to find out is if my rimms could take a 225 tread, also what would (if any) be the significance of changing the profile from 45 to 40?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

There are tyre calculators out there that would give the answer you seek and I suspect that going from a 45 to a 40 aspect ratio would cause a difference in the gearing but of course this depends on other factors. What I am surprised about is that you want to reduce the tyre even further than a 45! Mine's a 60 and that's just lovely for me but I'm sure you're aware that the lower the aspect ration the harder the ride.

Only two reasons for this. Street-cred (boy-racer) or seriously stupid "I must beat everyone on the road" mentalitity which is probably linked to my first reason. Why would you want lower than 45 (which is in itself already very low)?

Boy racer...street cred??? what narrow minded :censor:

no I like the looks of lower tred and there is NO way one could even think of being a boyracer in a T4 1.8 AVENSIS PLEEAAASE!.....

But thanks for your reply!

Hi mate,

Your rims will take 225 tread no problem, only thing to watch out for is the circumference remains the same.

See Tyre Calc

Seems 225/45/17 would be slightly better option that the 225/40/17. If you went for the 40 option, the ride would be slightly harder but the turning sharpness would be equally better (as there is less flex in the side wall)

Here's some pics of my wheels: 215/40/17 My Car Pics 4 and 5 are of the wheels I think.

@Parva - your response was a bit out of line I think.

  • 2 weeks later...

:ffs: Had the tyres changed to the Falken ones I mentioned. Stayed with the original toyota configuration. Anyway, had all tyres changed as the front ones were worn and the rear ones for some reason were both not of the same make(thats how I bought the car - wish I noticed at the time... :censor: )

so what happens...get down the motorway on the way to work and the steering wheel starts to vibrate like mad and also the seat has a go at it....Friggin Balancing was messed up....so I took me car back to the garage (Just Tyres in Reading) they checked the front wheels only and said that there was an issue that one of the weights they put on actually came off. So after they adjusted the front wheels (only) I drove to york and found that the vibrations would only start above 70mph (was overtaking a lorry...hm) So when we got back I took the car to Quick fits and they found that all wheels were 20g off (hope my suspension is still ok...) so they sorted all wheels out, they did ask me at what speeds I would get the vibrations and I mentioned 70mph plus - quite bad arround the 100mph. They then said that they only calibrate up to 70mph, well today I went to work and thought I'd give it a go and find out what happens at 100...and again I got vibrations through the steering wheel and seat at 100...Guess I'm going to have to take it back to them now and say I need these reballancing at speeds of over 100mph as I will be off to Germany soon and we all know what the speed limit is over there on the motorway....THERE AINT ONE :toast::yahoo::lol:

Does anyone out there know if a wheel balanced at 70mph should make any difference at speeds above 70?

You need to have the wheels balanced using a 'Haweka lug' adapter, most respectable tyres places will have this. I used to get this vibration between 70 and 80mph and after Tony from Wheels in motion HERE rebalanced them I've had no problems since. Let us know how you get on...

I'm thinking of Falken 512's too, as I've been a fan and had them fitted to my old Audi 90, VW Polo and Mercedes E Class. How do you find them on the T4 compared to original fit? (apart from the vibration issues)

They ait tooo bad...can get a bit of noise depending on the road surface, but from all reviews I checked they seemed to be a good all season tyre (got 4 out of 5 on all ratings). Got them for £55 each from camskill.co.uk if you manage to get them cheaper elsewhere...let us know please....I am quite sure if I keep my avensis that I will continue with these tyres....

hope that helps ya...

Oh, those good old Dunlop SP 3000-s...

I also had to throw them away after one year of usage, well i reached 29000 kms (about 18000 miles), and as i heard those are way good figures already.

Other Avensis users only got 9500 kms with it, so never again.

Instead of changing to /40 y guess in my case it would be better to raise to 215/50, and stay with the Michelins.

ONly thing is if you raise the profile you will knock out your speeometer, found this out by using on line trye calculators, I think your speedo will be out by about 5mph....thats why I stuck to the 45 profile....

Just need to get the ballancing sorted out now what a pain. No one has heard of these hawega lugs or what ever they're called :crybaby: ....
