1992 Gt4

I was thinking of getting a sexy little 6th gen Celica ST or GT, since the GT4 was priced out of my budget :'( Today some dude offered me a '92 GT4 (ST185 I think?) for £2000. To be honest, all the model numbers and stuff have been confusing me. Following model numbers across different websites have been giving me contradictory figures :( I'm probably just not doing it right.

Wonder if you guys could help me out here :) Its stock apart from a front mounted intercooler and has 80k on the clock (converted to miles). Would this be a wise purchase? Tbh I'm pretty desperate for a new car, my old escort is falling apart and the first vehicle I decide to visit for a test drive will probably get bought.

Also, would you be kind enough to quote me on the basic numbers, like ave mpg, bhp etc?

Thanks a lot

the ST-185 isnt the best GT4 and does have its faults (headgasket is weak if boost is raised and they can suffer from low oil pressure) but as long as it looks like its been looked after it will all be fine.

your looking around the 200bhp mark for a std car and expect around 22-25mpg for average fuel consumption depending on how you drive, you can get more but need to drive very steady.

bits to look for,

biggest prob is corrosion esp underneath and this can be worse on a UK car or an import that has been over here for a good while.

as said headgaket is a weak spot so look for any signs of overheating.

they can also develop water leaks from a couple of hoses which are a PITA to get at and the rocker cover gaket is prone to leaks, this isnt too hard a fix and will most likely be the cause of any oil at the back of the engine.

as on all gt4's if the radiator is a whiteish beige on the top tank its on its way out, it should be black or dark brown.

watch out for a crunchy third gear as this is a sign of a worn box and clutch slip as both will cost in terms of labour as the engine needs to be removed

best bet is nip on GT4OC and ask if some one near you can have a look over it if your unsure.

dont want to paint a bleak picture but forwarned is forarmed
