Rusty Sump

Just noticed that a friends 2003 03 reg Yaris 1.0 has a very rust sump - it's in pretty bad shape for a car thats not yet 4 years old. Is this normal?! Please could anyone else with a similar age Yaris have a look and see what condition yours is in. You can see it through the lower grill at the bottom of the bumper, or stick your head and a torch under the front bumper for a closer look!

It's not leaking (yet) but the paint is flaking off and it looks like some of the metal surface is coming off too. Might have to get the Hammerite out! How thick is the steel that the sump's made of?

Sumps as a rule are fairly robust things, so it won't be falling apart !

Due to their location on the car though, they are especially prone to elemental attack. Wire brush and a good lashing of Hammerite will tidy it up a treat !

Also 1 litre is cast iron block so does rust!

Yeah it looks pretty sturdy just badly rusted. Wire brush and hammerite it is.
