Hi everyone,

I am writing because I am considering buying a 2003 Avensis Wagon which seem to be in a good allround shape and a decent price but has a suspicously low 30k on it. Now in my little country which I won't name because of loyalty issues there is a big tradition of odometer spinning (backward that is) when it comes to used cars coming in from foreign import with no traceable service book (actually most of these cars are like that). I heard from BMW and Mercedes owners that their cars have a secret combination of buttons which reveal the original miles the car run because it takes its signal from somewhere else not where the odometer takes it from and it is also much harder to overwrite. He said approximately 70-80% of cheaters could be caught this way.

Does anyone know if such a thing exists in Toyotas more specifically in the new Avensis?

Hi,

if you read russian - you shall try to go to russian forums - if somebody knows about it - it is in russia :)

however even if you'll not find the way - try to go to your official Toyota dealer - i think they could get you good info from car computer.

also you can try to estimate the real mileage from the technical items of a car, such as condition of seats, steering wheel, pedals, brake discs, belts.

Sorry Russian is not exactly one of my strong points although we were forced to learn it for 8 years behind the Iron Curtain. Oh yeah, the sweet days of passive resistance :)

Anyway, the dealers were not very helpful. They all want you to buy their used cars for about 15 % more.
