Avensis That Wont Rev Over 4k

:help: Please help, hoping somone might have had the same problem...

Start the car and drive it first thing and all is fine. After about 5 miles it won't rev above about 4k revs. The problem is that the pulse to the injectors is cutting out, the spark however doesn't faulter. All the engine sensors have been tested and seem to be fine. It looks like an ecu fault but I have been told they are very reliable?

Thanks for reading, Alex

Opps, forgot to say it's a 1998 1.8 petrol.

could it be a crankshaft problem or even a fuel problem?

I have just had my car repaired by toyota. It cut out a couple of times and was difficult to restart. It wouldn't rev over 4k and our local garage suspected a crankshaft problem. We arranged to take it to another garage who had the equipment to tell us what the situation was as our eml was on and the day it was meant to go the car refused to start. The RAC came out and thought it was either a fuel problem or an immobilizer problem and towed it off to toyota for us.They discovered our fuel pump had packed up and needed to be replaced.Since its been done the car has been fine and it now does rev over 4k again so it may be worth looking in to.

At first I thought fuel pump but that seems ok. I have an oscilloscope (or however it's spelt lol) so I can test the crankshaft sensor while it's working.... wish me luck

On what evidence do you base that assumption? I would have to agree that the fuel-pump sounds like it's the most likely culprit and I would have that checked to rule it out as a certainty.

Just out of interest what model is it and what year? there was a recall for fuel problems on certain chassis numbers.I have only had my car for 2 years and the recall date was 2002.This is what I found on the web. When my fuel pump was replaced the recall work was also done as it hadn't been done before for some reason.

11-7-2002: 3,085 Avensis in VIN range SB153BB to SB172BB: possibility that excess residual stress remains on check valve of fuel pump during assembly leading it to leak fuel. Valeve to be re-tightened and relevant pipe to be replaced to protedt against stress. 30-9-2002: On 900 cars fitted with a spoiler the spoiler may become loose. Revised spoiler fixing to be used.

Just a theory: Following today's revelation of possible contaminated fuel from supermarket garages, a lot of people are reporting similar faults which seem to be O2 (oxygen) sensor problems. Also possible blocked/melted catalytic converter?

Just a bit of fuel for thought (groan) :)

problem comes in after about 5 miles.

sounds like fuel management going screwy as the effect of the choke mechanisms are withdrawn by the ECU or fuel starvation.

when starting with a hot engine does the problem occur straight away?

have you got a fuel line blockage between the tank and the pump that gradually causes the fuel pump to collapse the feed tube under vacuum?

have you got sediment in the fuel filters that is gradually sucked into the filter mesh but then settles back out when the engine is turned off ?
