Corolla 1.6 Colour Collection Feul Mpg

Hi there

I'm a new owner of a 1.6 Colour Collection and I have to say that I'm amazed at the car. I have several cars (used by the family), a Mazda Rx-8 (soon to be traded in for a Mx-5 Roadster Coupe) and a Suzuki Liana (the star in a reasonably priced car motor). The Rx-8 has always been my weekend car and would give me between 26 and 28 mpg on the motorway, with around 20 mpg in combined driving. I had originally bought the Liana as a motorway pounder and would regularly give me between 36 and 38 mpg (after 14k miles) on the motorway (in summer). Well, I have a baby on the way and needed something not only practical and economical but safe as well. So I plumped for the Corolla and I can honestly say that I am well impressed. I have covered nearly 4000 miles in the space of 2 months and at the start the car was returning 32 mpg on motorway trips. As I got past 2000 miles the engine seemed to have loosened and the mpg began to rise. Well, yesterday I managed to get 41.2 mpg on a 237 mile trip. The trip computer was stating 39.6 mpg but experience tells me that this is always down on the real value (miles done divided by fuel going in). I was gobsmacked because this despite being in a jam for 45 minutes on the M74 where trip computer dropped from 40.9 to 39.6 average mpg, the economy was so good. I was once in a 20 minute jam in my Rx-8 and it only returned 15 mpg :(. It is not only the economy that thas impressed me though. The quality and ride of the car are very good, but so is the handling. During my daily commute I cover 14 miles of country A-roads and it can handle the bends very well, much to my surprise. It is a very enjoyable car and that has left me feeling relaxed at the end of long journeys. The driving position is excellent for me. I'm 6 foot 2 inches but my torso is very long so I have trouble getting settled in most Japanese cars.

I did test drive the Auris, but the price and the soft ride/looser handling made me go for the 'old' model (56-plate Corolla). Well, that is how the salesman described it. I felt that I was right. The Auris may have a snazzy looking interior but the Corolla just felt more entertaining.

Anyway, this is a great site and I would like to thank the lady who suggested just using you toes to feather the throttle, as opposed to your whole foot. As soon as I started using this technique my daily commute mpg went from 29 to 33 mpg. And I have never considered myself heavy footed.

Cheers

D - a very happy Corolla owner
