How To Check Oil Level In 2002 D4d

Hi All

This is going to sound so basic but -

How on earth do you check the oil level in these cars !!!

Reason is that when I pull out the dipstick, there is a smear of oil way above the two marks on one side, but turn it over and its about halfway between the two marks

The dipstick seems to slide against its holder on the way out, thus giving one side different to the other

Any help gratefully received !

Pull out the dipstick, clean with a tissue, re-insert and leave for 5-10 seconds then pull it back out and check. If all else fails, pull dipstick out first thing in the morning before the engine has been started and read as that will give a true reading.
