Hi people,

Where do i start ???

I have a 1998 avensis gls 2.0 petrol, Firstly it has just failed M.O.T on emmissions (02) ?

I had new 02 sensor fitted 3 months ago and am about to get new cat fitted tomorrow from kwik fit at a cost of £210.00 (fingers crossed) i have more problems though,, Main irratation keyfob locking wont work,press lock or unlock the lights flash and sound from relay but nothing else,I can use door switch from inside to lock and unlock doors and boot Any sugestions ???also front headlights,the electric headlight adjuster works on offside light only,,also car is pinking when engine is hot ie normal running tempreture (hoping new cat will sort that out) by the way the car has done 299000 miles so not doing too bad i guess....HELP!!!!!!

Hi,

Pinking is caused by;

too lean a mixture - performance will be down and engine temp up

incorrect timing - same symptoms as above but poor starting from cold as choke won't mask the lean mixture problem

too low revs for vehicle load - drop down a gear or rev the engine higher

coked up engine causing pre-ignition - needs a decoking

I've heard that if you change the oil immediately before the MOT test then it isn't holding hydrocarbons in the vented crankcase fumes and can reduce the chance of failing the MOT. Could be worth a try but the best bet is to put it on a rolling road to test the power and get the cyclinder pressures checked with a full diagnostic just in case you have worn bores or valves.

good luck.
