Dashboard Lights

I have a 55 Avensis and although I can dim the dashboard lights when the headlights are on. When the head lights are off they return to full brightness, can I turn these down (Or better still off). This is the first car Ive driven that has the dasboard lights on permanentley and its all too easy to set off without the lights on in a street lit area.

I've looked in the manual, and it doesn't appear you can :(

btw, unfortunately due to the design of the dials, if you have the lights off, you can't really see the dials - the legends aren't white like most cars.

But I know what you mean EXACTLY.

it annoys me that in daylight, dim weather, when I switch on my lights, the dash lights get relatively dimmer and harder to see (with headlamps off, the dash lights are on max). - off course I can set the dash lights for maximum intensity when headlamps are on, but that would burn out my retinas at night :D

I also have developed an unhealthy habit of leaving the lights on, and rely on the lights on warning now :(

Mine is an 03, and I thought the dash lights can be adjusted via the odo button - the one that scrolls between odo, trip 1 and trip 2. As you scroll through, one setting shows little dashes and a turn of the dial adjusts these and the brightness of the dash lights. Hope this may help.

Unfortunately this only adjusts the brightness of the dashboard lights for when the headlamps are on. (night mode)

It doesn't affect the intensity of the dashlights (or switch them off) when the headlamps are off. (daytime mode)

Thanks guys, thats pretty much what I thought. Now Ive just got to work out how to set the heating system so that it blows hot air at my feet, the blowing at feet only setting on the heater controls seams to be there to con me.
