Powervan Starting Problem.

Hi all,

Sorry if this thread is in the wrong place, i just spent over an hour searching through old post's to see if i could find anything remotely close to my problem  Why is there no Van section?

Anyway, i bought my V-Reg(99) Toyota Hi-ace Powervan GS 2.4 Diesel LWB just under a year ago and all was fine for about a week then i jumped in it one morning to go to work and it would not start!

All the ignition light's come on as usual but when i turn the key to start nothing happens apart from the LED clock dims out and if the stereo is on it will go off.

I did manage to get it to start by turning the ignition to "On", pop the bonnet, take the plastic cover off the "Ignition Relay" and then touching the contacts together and it turns over! I have left the plastic cover off and have been using this method for nearly a year because i am fed up with idiot mechanics costing me money!

Since then i have had a mechanic tell me it was the start motor(£130), someone else told me it must be the Ignition Relay(£40), someone else then told me it must be the Ignition Switch(£55) and finally a Toyota specialist that was a friend of a friend took my keys for the weekend then give them back to me because he couldn't get it to start although i had showed him the proceedure i had been using, he told me the injectors were naff(Nothing wrong with them) and he did manage to fix my central locking(Nothing wrong with that either!!) All that i did was jump it and its been starting ever since!!!! WOW, what a mechanic!!

So, there you have it, i decided not to let anyone else look at it because i couldn't afford any more useless bits(Toyota would not refund electrical components, it's ok, they only make millions!) or the time off work if anyone made a bodge of it.

The one thing i will say is that the day before the ignition packed up i changed the radio cassette to a sony cd radio player but it did start in the morning ok, it was when i switched it off and tried to start it again when i had got to work. Today i tried switching the stereo back to the original and this made no difference.

Sorry for going on and on but i just wanted you to get the whole picture :D PLEASE HELP! Someone!!

OK, i have waited a while but no answers.

Do Toyota specialists sign a Privacy agreement so we pay astronomical prices for help??

There must be someone out there that knows a little about these vans!

Please help :(

Thanks anyway :(

Hello,

Don't know much about vans. To me they're just cars with big boots!

Have you tried a new Battery, or what about a duff earth from the starter motor.
