Blooming Sensors

My T-Sport has been in 4 times over the last 4 months for sensors, first they've changed the oxygen sensor which cured the problem I had (no Traction control or VSC) then after a month problem comes back, they then replace the fuel sensor as the cars been running a bit rich, this time a week and it comes back can't remember the other sensor they've changed but the problem has come back again.

Anybody had any similiar issue's ?

Last time it was in they've spotted i've had a Sport Cat put in (2yrs ago mind) and are suggesting this could be the problem, what they haven't / can't do is explain to me why this could be the issue and why the car has been alright for 2 yrs.

If it is the cat then I don't mind paying for a new one to be fitted (sporty type obviously) I will be a bit miffed if the problem still pursists however.

Where do i stand reguards proving something is or isn't a factor reguards warranty and is there anybody on here that can explain why the cat could be an issue...

Don't get me wrong so far they've been brilliant and if they are 100% sure the cat is the problem i will change it but the impression i'm getting is it might be, and they might be wrong...

Thanks

Colin

How u doing mate..... i think it is the cat i had this problem.. firstly i had a cat by pass eg no cat it came on after 50 miles so i guess sports cat would take longer......... but maybe not 2 years longer. There are 2 sensors 1 in front and 1 behind the cat. they have a set of parameters i would think and if the readings don't match what the ecu has got programmed its lights on i'm afraid my toyota dealer said anything but standard cat would bring the lights as tolerances are quite tight. He said they do tend to come on say if u've been pottering around for months then blast it up motorway the change of driving style can trigger the sensors. He also said the cts has a total of 180 sensors checking stuff. Hard to believe where they have crammed them into but he said so. I'd say avoid cat issues obviously its something important to engine oytherwise they wouldn't waste 2 sensors on it

Sorry pal

before paying for anymore sensor's to be fitted by the toyota thick monkeys just go buy a diagnostic code reader and check for yourself .

once you have your reader put standard cat back on use code reader to reset ecu then see if the problem goes away if it dont then the toyota monkeys are wrong again.

T-Sport_Jay after your tsport de-cat did your exhaust sound a lot louder.

So far its all been under warranty, but they do seem a little vague as to the exact problem, which is why i'm a little reluctant to just buy a new Cat until they are 100% sure its causing the problem, I don't have the standard cat any more I had this Aftermarket one fitted over 2 yrs ago.

Can the perimeters of the sensors be changed so they will accept a greater tolerance, and also if the car still passes emition (not sure thats spelt right) test does that mean the cat is working fine, sorry for so many questions but the Sports cat made such a difference i'm reluctant to fit a standard one back in...

Thanks

i am sure your sport cat is working fine.

toyota dealer need to find out what course the ecu to reject your sport cat and since it is a after market cat toyota dealer are NOT going to, they will just blame the sport cat is the easy way out for them.

the code reader will pick up any fault from sensor's so get yourself a code reader see if there is a error code displaying if not take the car back to toyota dealer and tell them it is not the sport cat coursing the error and unless toyota dealer can proof your sport cat is at fault which i know they cant and like you say you use it for 2 years without any problem's i think is upto toyota to fixed it under warrenty for this sudden fault occur on your cts.

Saw the news tonight about the dodgy fuel thats been going around the AA guy they interviewed said its been killing exhaust sensors the Oxygen one in particular, this is a sensor that toyota have replaced twice in my car the last 3-4 months, think its possible there's been dodgy fuel for that long?

Now I think about it I stopped using esso fuel and switched to Shell a few months ago after I discovered a Shell garage not to far away...

To be honest mate it sounded absolutely awful............ as if it were gargling listerine lol! sounded like a huge exhaust being fitted to a 1.0 corsa

The performance was rubbish too very sluggish not enough back pressure so i was told

i asked toyota the same about re tuning the ecu to allow the new tollerences and they said it could be done but by a toyota performance specialist

  • 1 month later...

Cars been in a few times now, this sensor issue is causing them a bit of a headache, i've told them about the sport cat and the blitz air filter fitted, they don't seem to think either are making a difference, its back in next thurs for the ECU to be replaced... :(

Picked my car back up yesterday with new ECU installed so we will see how it goes, I spoke to the guy thats been working on the car today just to ask why the ecu was changed and he told me they ordered a new ecu which had been programmed to except a larger tolerance so the problems i've been having which may have been caused by the filter and cat straying outside the normal ecu parameters sould now be sorted, time will tell I suppose, I have to mention I've been really impressed with the service by Toyota World Bridgend, there's been no hassle (ok the cars been in a few times over the last month but always explained why and what for) and I think credit where its due...
