I have recently started have starting problems with my Toyota Avensis 1999 2.0 TD. In the morning it starts fine. I drive to work and park up when I leave work and try and start, the starting sequence is normal except the engine won't "kick in". I can take 10-15 key turns before it will start. Here is a strange discovery, if i don't carry my keys in my trouser's pocket all day it will start first time. What is going on??

at a guess i'd suggest the batteries in the keyfob are on their way out.

overnight, or when not in your pocket they are not being used and therefore the batteries 'rest' and have the maximum available charge for their age/use.

When you have them in your pocket they can be accidentally pressed thereby using up the juice in the batteries. it's not until you've rested them for 10-15 seconds that it has enough power to work.

its a theory anyway. the other could be the steering lock, which is apparently a known weak point for electrical failure.

change the batteries first and see how it goes.

thanks for the reply but I have changed the batteries but problem still exists. It seems to be if the key is warm the engine won't start. If i put the key in the fridge for 10 minutes (seriously) the engine starts 1st time. I took the key to get a copy thinking it might be a problem with the transponder chip but i was told that there is no transponer chip in the key. Help!!!

The batteries in the key will have NO effect on the car starting. They are purely for the remote central locking (if fitted)

The problem could be with the ignition switch on the rear of the lock barrel...or the lock barrel itself.

The problem is almost certainly the ignition switch, bit if a weak point. Had mine done at an independent cost me £100, if you know know how to do it yourself will be even cheaper.

Sorry guys, I have just replaced the ignition swith and it has made no difference. Car will only start when the key is cold (not good when its summer) Surely this just leaves a faulty key, but when I brought it to be cut I was told there was no transponer chip in it. Does a 1999 TD Avensis key have a transponder chip as standard?
