Right me and my dad are going to do my head gasket on my GT4 ST185 tommorow. He is highly knoledgeable on these things and capapble of it, but hasnt done a GT4 before, cossies etc yes.

Is there anything in paticular we should be doing other than the usual stuff, when we are putting the head back etc. I have heard of a water pipe in the middle of the engine setup that is prone to cracking, is this tru?

Also does anyknow what the torque settings are for the ST185 uk head?, i think cam timing is on the bonnet sticker, although well just mark up with tippex prob.

I am gonna do the headgasket , all the other gaskets around the head, cam belt , oil change, fuel filter, and 2 cv joints, if i missed anything out please tell. ( the cv joint are starting to knock abit, not HG related :P )

Hi

Torque settings for 3S-GTE 1990 to 1993

Step1 36 ft lbs

Step 2 tighten an additonal 90 deg.

Therefore, mark each bolt with tippex is a good idea.

Timing

Set crankshaft pulley at TDC

Inlet/exhaust pulleys have punched dents which should line up with the matchmarks on the timing belt cover. Best to look at the camshaft end bearings which have notches.

It's vital that whilst putting the belt on ..there is tension by applying tension with the No. 1 idler pulley.

It's very easy to be a tooth out! so turn the c/shaft over 2 or 3 times to ensure correct timing.

Any problems please email me at sdmin@stickylicky.com

cheers

just realised that you've done the job by now!!!

Yeah cheers for that, i noticed a stcker ont he cam cover with the torque measurments aswell. Just got a bit of a rough idling problem now, took some pictures before and after, the before picture shows a couple of pipes which seem to be the wrong way round

When i bought the car, the prev owner had installed a K&N air filter, and there seemed to be a pipe leading from ( what would have been ) around the air box area with a screw in the end, leading to around the injector rail area. My before pictures show this pipe connecting onto a little nozzel near the 2nd injector. Now the vac line off my fuel regualtor seems to be going there, and have the pipe with the screw in , on the floor as a spare part.

So basically need to get in there and sort these pipes out, put them back to how they were

yep rough idling sounds like an air leak. check all the hoses are secure and leak free. a can of brake cleaner sprayed methodicaly around the pipe will show up an air leak (engine revs will rise)

Well the car started making a VERY bad rattling noise, so i investigated it the Hydrolic tensioner and the tensioner bearing have gone buggered. Didnt change these bits, so lucky escape there, gonna get them from fensport as the are cheaper then Mr T

Well all is well in the Gt4 household again. Although i still have a rough idle, just goes up and down a bit and you can hear the fluctations. Coudl this be down to the 2mm HG that is now on it? It also has a XS power downpipe, moongoose exhuast and K&N filter. along with other boost related things.

It has a dumpvalve but the idle is the same with it off aswell .. any suggestion people?

I have checked the ignition timing, vac pipes which i am aware of, has recent HT leads, plugs, Cap and rotor arm..
