Cam Belt

HI Guys, just a quickie i hope.

Our Yairs has done just over 50k, and the Haynes manual says to replace the Cam Belt after 40k (i think).

Now, as the car runs the timing off a chain, and the belt runs the water pump, alternator and air con, what would be the first sign if it had gone? Would the car over heat from lack of water pump?

Also, is it an easy job changing the belt. I ask for accessability reasons, as i know there is no messing about with timing, thank god, but it seems from first glance that it is very limited access down there. I've worked on other cars where the wheel arch liner comes out and have great access, but the yaris has a solid wheel arch.

Ps, its a 1.3SR if that changes anything.

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Hello, long time since you have been on here.

I think that you are getting the Auxilliary drive belt confused with the Cambelt.

The Yaris has (as you rightly say) a cam chain which IIRC needs an audible inspection at 70,000 miles and is virtually indestructable.

The Auxilliary drive belt should be inspected and the tension adjusted if required at each 20,000 mile service.

I understand that the inspection is for signs of cracking and general deterioration of the grooved belt. Tension adjustment is achieved by loosening off the alternator mounting and moving it to tension the belt.

I have recently disposed of my Haynes manual so cannot comment on the life of the auxilliary drive belt.

Assuming it is the Aux belt we're talking about it powers the water pump, air-con if fitted, Alternator and I think Power steering pump. First thing to notice when it's on it's way out will be a squealing (particularly when cold) and it'd probably be a flat Battery you'd notice first.

Hi guys,

its nice to be remembered, i didnt expect that.

yeh, sorry, the Auxilary belt is what i meant, not the cam belt (hold habits die hard).

The haynes says to replace it on 40k and its now in the 50k's.

You said that the first thing i would notice is a flat Battery, but what about if it snaps while on the move, say on the motorway?

Can anyone comment on the accessability problems? It looks real tight? I also read that i will have to remove one of the engine mounts to get the belt off and have to support the engine. This leeds me onto another problem.

I want to know if there is a central point that i can jack the car on using a hydraulic jack, to raise both wheels at the same time, instead of jacking each side? This would also be the point i would use to support the engine while i have the mount off? (i dont understand what it says in the Haynes). I have previously jacked it on what i think is the Gear box flange ( a very large flange that seems like it bolts the clutch to the engine)

I am unsure about doing this again, as last time i did it, oil appeared on the flange, but i dont know if this was there before or indeed caused by me doing the service and changing the oil and filter. It never got any worse.

Cheers guys,

Jay
