I put my air con on for the first time in ages the other day and it stinks to high heaven. Anyone know why this is?

If not used regularly, mold begins to grow on the filter, causing the smell, run it at least once a week for 10 mins or so, even in the winter. I think the more you use it, the quicker the smell goes away.

The boiling kettle solution works!

I recently took my Avensis in for a service and felt quite embarassed when the service engineer told me I had a smelly air-con. I knew it was nothing to do with the air-con and more to do with the fact I'd had a curry the night before. :blushing:

Just used one of the aerosol, anti bacterial aircon cleaner thingys.......did the job  was going to do the old kettle steamer caper but couldn't see how this was going to kill bacteria. As my littlun has multiple allergies I didn't want to risk any mould or fungi being left in the system. Smells nice and fresh now

I got a good tip to keep the air con sweet from my mate who fits and services industrial air conditioning systems.

Once a month run the air con on 'low' for 10 minutes followed by 10 minutes on 'high'. This kills any bacteria and fungus in the system while cold and then dries everything out on high.

He also suggests keeping the air con on all the time where the engine size allows. I wouldn't do it on my wife's Civic 1.4 because the air con saps power but there's no noticeable difference to performance or economy on my Avensis diesel and the air con's on all the time.

If you don't use the air con regularly the seals within the coolant system corrode and are very expensive to replace. It's much cheaper to run with cool air than have to fork out £500-£800 for an air con overhaul.

What's the name of the stuff you got Jovensis and where did you get it? Went in Halfords today but they didn't have anything.
