There are a few options on the go regarding MoT these days:

1. Go for one of the budget ones, who'll almost certainly find a fault (which may not be a 'real' fault, i.e. your brake pads are wearing but in all honesty they've maybe a good 6 months left) and offer to repair it for you.

2. Take the route you did and try your dealer who may find a fault (which may not be a 'real' fault, i.e. your brake pads are wearing but in all honesty they've maybe a good 6 months left) and offer to repair it for you.

3. Search out a council approved MoT test station. How they operate (I stand to be corrected) is, the bulk of their work is in testing PSVs such as buses, taxis, etc. but they also have to provide the service to the public, and as these stations don't undertake repair work, it's not in their interest to pull you up if your pads have a few months left as they don't stand to profit from it. So what you get is the basic legal minimum, no frills, and an honest fail, if the car is not roadworthy.

Naturally being a thrifty person, I plump for option 3 as the motor's out of warranty and I'm well able to undertake most of the mechanicals for myself.

Cheers.
